Using internationalised custom domain names on Azure Static Web Apps

Azure App Service does not support Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) natively. However, you can use Punycode to represent Unicode characters in ASCII characters.

Regarding the validation issue, it is possible that the validation is failing because the domain name is not in the correct format. Please make sure that you are entering the domain name in the correct format, for example, "xn--www-mcronincluded-6tb.com" instead of www.mācronincluded.com.

Ensure Proper SSL Certificate Coverage

Multi-Domain Certificates: If you are using CNAME records for multiple subdomains or domains, ensure that your SSL certificate covers all necessary domains, including both the IDN and its Punycode equivalent. This may require obtaining a multi-domain or wildcard SSL certificate that includes all relevant domain variations.

CNAME Setup: Verify that your CNAME records are correctly configured in your DNS settings. The CNAME should point to the appropriate target domain, and there should be no conflicting records that could cause resolution issues.

Redirects: If using CNAMEs leads to issues with content delivery (e.g., showing default pages), consider implementing HTTP redirects on your server to ensure users are directed to the correct content based on their requested URL.

We have also tried a few times with the punycode version, let me get the team to get some screenshots of the puny code being used.

Yes still having the issue and hadnt had a chance to come back on it.

trying to use www.xn--puwai-gwa.com which is the punycode for www.puāwai.com

I have confirmed with go daddy that the cname is correctly registered

this is what i get when putting in custom domain for the punycode

Add custom domain

 Enter domain

2 Validate + add

Domain name

www.xn--puwai-gwa.com

Validate domain ownership

Hostname record type

CNAME

Copy the CNAME hostname record and enter it with your DNS provider to confirm your domain ownership. It can take up to 48 hours for DNS entry changes to take effect.

Name www.xn--puwai-gwa.com is not valid.
