Unable to upload promotions feed file

Hello friends!

I am trying to create a promotion by uploading a promotions file. I have created a tab delimited .txt file, but when I try to upload it, nothing happens after I choose my file and click "upload". The window just disappears.

This is how I have it designed:

When creating a promotion manually, it works fine.

What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks much.

    Hello noleo,

Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Advertising Community forum!

I am sorry to hear you cannot upload your promotion file as desired. I understand how important is to upload everything smoothly and with no challenges. What you are describing sounds like a browser issue, make sure browser troubleshooting is done first. Please clean your cache and cookies, you can also try in private window. I would also suggest try another browser and see if that helps.

Your Microsoft Merchant Center store must have at least one catalog feed file. For manual uploads, .TSV or .XML file formats are accepted. For FTP uploads (available in the United States only), .TSV, .TXT, or .XML file formats are accepted. After you create a feed file, you will submit it to Microsoft Merchant Center. Merchant promotions are free to add to your product ads, with the usual charges for any clicks you get.

If you want to submit promotions in bulk, use a promotions feed file to submit multiple promotions with one feed from a spreadsheet. Take a look at the Merchant promotions feed specifications or view an example of a .TXT or .XML feed before submitting your feed. (You must use Edge, Chrome, or Firefox browsers to view the .xml feed example.)

    1. From the top menu, select Tools > Merchant center.
    2. Select the store name > the Feeds tab.
    3. Select Create feed.
    4. Enter the Feed name.
    5. Select the Feed typeCountry of saleLanguage, and Default Currency (optional) from the preset lists.
    6. Select your Input Method and input the feed file accordingly.
    7. Select Create feed.

    What you need to know:

    ·    If the promotion doesn't apply to all products, be sure to map the promotion ID to the correct set of products in the master feed.

    ·    The name of the file needs to start with Promotions_. If uploading via FTP, the file name of .TSV, .TXT, or .XML files must match the file name specified for a catalog's settings. In the case of compressed text format, the compressed .TXT file inside the archive (.ZIP, .GZ, .GZIP, .TAR.GZ, .TGZ) must have the matching file name.

    ·    You can use Microsoft Advertising to upload the file manually.

    ·    You can use FTP to send the file programmatically. If you use FTP, make sure that the file name starts with Promotions_.

In addition to the promotions you create in your feed file or in Microsoft Advertising, we'll crawl your website's data to find and display relevant Merchant promotions during ad delivery. Ad decorations like Merchant promotions can increase your product ads' performance. We'll automatically crawl your website's data to enhance your product offers unless you opt out of crawled data.

    Opt out of crawled data

    1. From the top menu, select Tools > Merchant center.
    2. Select the appropriate Microsoft Merchant Center store > Settings > Automatic updates.
    3. Under Crawled data, select the Block crawled data checkbox.
    4. Select Submit.

Please also check our help page regarding policies and guidelines: What are Merchant Promotions policies and editorial guidelines? (microsoft.com)

I hope you find this reply informative. I will send you private message if you need any further assistance!

    Sincerely,

    Hi Dagmara,

After further testing, I have found that it is not working if I have a Promotion ID that has been used in another stopped promotion. If I upload a promotions file using a new promotion ID, it works.

In the upload file window, it displays this informational message at the top:

"Any promotions you upload with the same promotion ID, target country/region & language will override your existing promotions."

I assumed it would override the previous promotion so I could re-use the promo ID. Is that message no longer correct and is there a way to remove a stopped promotion or re-use a promotion ID?

The reason I would like to re-use the same promo ID is that I have already tagged my products in my website with the promo ID and have set up the same promo ID in Google Ads. I use an import from Google Ads to create my MS Merchant Feed, so the Promo ID is set already.

Thanks for the help with this.

    Hello noleo,

Can the promotion that has stopped not be deleted? Or has it been deleted, and you are still seeing the same message?

Please reply to me private message, as I need account specific information. We might be able to upload the file form our side once we discuss next steps.

    Sincerely,

    Hi noleo,

I think also that because you already used this promotion ID it's not working for you.

    • ID must be unique for each promotion.
    • For online promotions that apply to specific products, the promotion_id in the promotions feed must match the promotion_id in the product feed so Microsoft Ads knows which products apply to the promotion.
    • Spaces or symbols (for example $ or %) are not allowed.
    • Values must be separated by commas.

You would have to restart the old promotion that you stopped.

    I hope that helps!

    Sincerely,

    Hi Dagmara,

There is no option to restart the promotion. I only see an option to "export". See the screenshot below.

We will go ahead and create a new promotion with a new promotion ID just so we can get the promotion started. At least I now know that I cannot use a promotion again once I have stopped it.

The message that appears at the top of the file upload window says that we can override existing promotions by uploading a promotion with the same promotion ID. See the second screenshot below. Since the system in unable to do this, that message should be removed.

    Thanks much for the help.
