I want to stream movies from my Surface Duo 2 to an external display while on the go like in my SUV which has an HDMI input to watch movies on the headrest screens from an external device. I plug an USB-c to HDMI adapter from my Surface Duo 2 to the HDMI input, but there is no sound when watching a movie.

It works if I connect my laptop to the HDMI input using the same USB-C to HDMI adapter.

    Hi John Jackson3.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Please verify the information to connect your Surface Duo 2 to a TV or External Screen.

    Which Cables do you need?

    • On Surface Duo. Your Surface Duo has a USB-C port which can output video to an external display. You’ll need to use the USB-C port and a compatible adapter or cable.
    • On your TV, monitor, or projector. Look at the video ports on your TV, monitor, or projector. Ports you usually see include HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA. This will help you determine what adapters and cables you need for your device, as they're often sold separately.

Ok I tried it on different devices. It looks like it doesn't work with all HDMI devices. It works on my 65" TV, but receive no video or audio on my 32" TV. Also, as I mentioned just receive video and no audio in my SUV. What version of HDMI does it require to work correctly?

    Hi, John Jackson 3.

It's great that you want to stream movies from your Surface Duo 2 to an external display. The lack of sound could be few to a few reasons. Let's troubleshoot the issue and try to resolve it:

    1. Check HDMI Connection: Ensure that the USB-C to HDMI adapter is securely connected to your Surface Duo 2 and the HDMI input on the SUV's headrest screen. Sometimes loose connections can result in audio issues.
    2. Volume Settings on Surface Duo 2: Check the volume settings on your Surface Duo 2 to make sure it's not muted or turned down. Also, check the media volume specifically, as some devices have separate volume controls for notifications and media.
    3. Volume Settings on the SUV Headrest Screen: Check the volume settings on the headrest screen to ensure it's not muted or set too low.
    4. Audio Output Settings: Verify that the audio output is correctly set to the HDMI output. Here's how you can check:
      • On your Surface Duo 2, go to "Settings."
      • Select "Connected devices" or "Connected devices & accessories."
      • Look for "Cast" or "Cast media" options and make sure the audio output is set to HDMI.
    5. Restart Both Devices: Try restarting both your Surface Duo 2 and the SUV headrest screen. Sometimes, a simple reboot can fix connectivity or configuration issues.
    6. Different HDMI Adapter: If the issue persists, it's possible that the USB-C to HDMI adapter you're using doesn't support audio output. Consider trying a different adapter or check the specifications of your current adapter to confirm audio support.
    7. Compatibility Issue: In some cases, there might be compatibility issues between the Surface Duo 2 and the SUV headrest screen. Check the manufacturer's documentation on the TV or support resources to see if there are any known issues or updates that address this problem.
    8. Alternate Audio Connection: If the HDMI connection still doesn't work, you can try using an auxiliary cable (3.5mm audio cable) to connect the audio output of your Surface Duo 2 to the audio input on the SUV headrest screen.
    9. Software Updates: Make sure both your Surface Duo 2 and the headrest screen have the latest software updates installed. Updates can often address bugs and improve device compatibility.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, please feel free to contact Surface Technical Support directly for further assistance:

    1. Please go to: https://support.microsoft.com/contactus
    2. Select Devices
    3. Select "Get Home Support"
    4. Click: Don't want to use the Get Help app? Get support in your browser
    5. Type out "Surface Duo"
    6. Press get help
    7. On the bottom click Contact support or Sign in to contact support
    8. From the drop lists select the items that apply and then you get a list of available options to get a support agent to contact you depending on your selected issue.

    Thank you.
