New-tab page in InPrivate mode uses Bing instead of the default search engine

Changing the default search engine to something other than Bing and configuring search on new tabs to use the address bar causes the selected default engine to be used on new tabs.

However, when running v81.0.416.68 in InPrivate mode, the new tabs appear to always use Bing search, regardless of the configured default engine. Is there a way to have new tabs also use the default search engine, instead?

I think I know now what is happening. . I am actually searching directly using the address bar and not the search bar in both Normal and InPrivate mode that is why I missed your question.

You are right when using Normal window, it automatically use the address bar but not when using InPrivate.

I believe it is best to report this issue from the link below in order to add this feature on Edge: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussi...

The feature of searching with other search engine was fixed last Mar 31, 2020 (check the spoiler from that link) however it looks like Microsoft has only done it with Normal mode and did not do the same with InPrivate mode. I will also report the same on my end but the more report they receive, the faster Microsoft will address the issue. I will also post to other forum so more user will report this issue.

    Hi 2k20,

I am also using Microsoft Edge (same version v81.0.416.68) and mine works just fine. I set new tab to search using the address bar, set it to google search engine as my default search engine and it gives me google result all the time. I don't know if it helps but I only have one search engine that is set for the address bar (you might want to erase the other search engine that are listed to test).

If it's still having issue, try to re-install Microsoft Edge to solve the problem (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge).

    Sincerely,

    Lee

Thanks Lee, but that's not what I am seeing here. I also tried removing all search engines except for the default one, but still when browsing in InPrivate mode the search defaults to Bing. I see the same behavior in Windows 10 and a legacy Windows 7 VM.

Does your InPrivate mode use google, instead?

You are right of course - the issue is with the InPrivate search box, only. I must have got too fixated on that "InPrivate search with Microsoft Bing" box to even notice the address bar ;-) Reported on the tech board here. Thanks again.
