Edge on Android Add to Phone

The Add to Phone option in Edge on Android has changed. I'm currently using version 129.0.2792.65

In earlier versions I was able to add a specific webpage URL to my Android home screen. However, Add to Phone now appears to check if the webpage you are viewing has an associated app and only gives you the option to install the app. It does this whether or not you have the app already installed on your phone.

For example:

Lets say I open Edge on my Android phone and go to www.independent.co.uk/sport

I decide that it's a page I'd like to view each day. I could add it to favourites but it would be easier to just click an icon on my phone's home page to open that page directly without even having to open Edge. So, I open settings and click Add to Phone.

I don't have the Independent app installed but Edge now prompts me with Install App and only gives me the option to cancel or install. If I click Install, it asks me to add an icon to the home screen and if I do that, the new icon doesn't take me to the PlayStore, as you would expect, but simply adds an icon that opens the homepage of the website, i.e. www.independent.co.uk, not the page I wanted, www.independent.co.uk/sport

If you add a webpage that does not have an associated app, such as www.rhs.org.uk/garden-inspiration

the Add to Phone option gives you a Create Shortcut prompt and will create an icon with a direct link to the page from the home screen.

Good day Alfie_J_UK, thanks for your question. I am glad to be able to provide assistance to you today. Sorry to know about this and in this case you can try to download an older version of Edge if this is what will correct the issue and also I would suggest is for you to send a feedback to the team that is working on Edge via the browser itself by tapping on the 3 dots > Help and feedback and cascade it from there and hopefully this will be fixed on the next update.

    Hi Paul,

I downloaded the previous version (128.0.2739.82) from the uptodown site* and this has fixed the problem. This older version uses an ellipses icon at the top right to access settings and displays an 'Add to Home Screen' option which does what it says on the tin.

The latest version (129.0.2792.65) has the settings as a hamburger icon at bottom right and does not have the Add to Home Screen option, just Add to Phone.

I will pass this information via the Help and Feedback option as suggested.

*Note to users of uptodown.com - don't be tricked into clicking the download options at the top of the page, they are ads. Also ignore the Captcha box. Scroll down to the bottom and click the green Download button. Remember to uninstall the current version of Edge (Android) before opening the downloaded installation file.

Glad to know that the functionality that you are after is working again and hopefully the Edge team will be able to patch this on the next update.
