Edge on Linux hardware acceleration issues on older ati x1300 card

Hello so recently on one of my older computers that I use once in a while on my workbench which has an ATI X1300 I just updated edge to version 117.0.2045.31-1 trough apt upgrade. I noticed when I went to YouTube and tried to watch a video it started to show visual glitches and also the home page on edge when I would open it, so I went ahead and disabled hardware acceleration and the issues went away, I also reinstalled it and it still happens so I'm just wondering is this a bug? Or did something change so these older cards don't work?

Any info would be great Thank you.

    Hello, DX9.0C

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having issues with hardware acceleration on your older ATI X1300 card. It seems that this is a common problem for some Linux users who use Microsoft Edge or other Chromium-based browsers. There are a few possible reasons and solutions for this issue, which I will try to explain below.

    • One reason could be that your graphics driver is outdated or incompatible with the latest version of Edge. You can try to update your driver or install a different one that supports the proper acceleration profile. You can check the status of your driver and hardware acceleration by typing in the address bar and looking at the information displayed edge://gpu
    • Another reason could be that Edge does not have the right flags enabled to use hardware acceleration on Linux. You can try to enable some flags that may improve the performance and compatibility of Edge with your card. To do this, type in the address bar and search for the following flags:  edge://flags

Override software rendering list: This flag allows Edge to use hardware acceleration on unsupported GPUs. Enable this flag and restart Edge.

Use ChromeOS direct video decoder: This flag enables a different video decoder that may work better with some GPUs. Disable this flag and restart Edge.

VaapiVideoDecoder and VaapiVideoEncoder: These flags enable the use of VAAPI, which is a video acceleration API for Linux. Enable these flags and restart Edge.

Use EGL: This flag enables the use of EGL, which is an interface between rendering APIs and the native platform window system. Enable this flag and add to the command line when launching Edge.--use-gl=egl

A third reason could be that your card is simply too old or weak to handle hardware acceleration on modern web pages and videos. In this case, you may have to disable hardware acceleration altogether or use a different browser that works better with your card. You can disable hardware acceleration by going to the Edge settings, clicking on System, and toggling off the option "Use hardware acceleration when available".

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me.
