Why does Edge use so much memory in the background?

After I manually kill the process, a memory-consuming process keeps reappearing after a while.

    Thank you for the screenshots.

On those two tabs in Autoruns, find any Edge entries (not Edge WebView) like the ones indicated below and uncheck those entries, then restart (not shut down) your PC, that should stop Edge running in the background and using system resources.

On Windows 11, Microsoft Edge is a startup app by default, I think the first step to finding a solution is to stop it from starting up on boot.

    • Go to Settings -> Apps -> Startup and untick Microsoft Edge from the list and restart the computer, that will at the very least prevent it from opening on its own on startup.

Please keep me posted with the results and experiment by running Edge and try to determine what is opening new instances.

If you have a lot of tabs open in Edge, then that would be causing all those sub-processes to re-appear even if Edge is shut down.

If you have already removed Edge from the Startup processes, then restarted your PC and that did not resolve the problem:

Click the link below to download a small free utility that does not require installation.

    https://download.sysinternals.com/files/Autoruns.zip

When the file downloads, unzip it.

    Run Autoruns64 as Administrator

    1

Select the 'Logon' tab at the top of Autoruns.

Please provide a screenshot of all entries on that tab.

    2

Select the 'Scheduled Tasks' tab at the top of Autoruns.

Please provide a screenshot of all entries on that tab.

If that is a regular problem with Edge using that much resources, even though you are not using Edge, please provide those screenshots from that Autoruns utility.
