After updating to Win11 24h2 a user's computer has lost her MS print to PDF function. I have attempted to re-enable it in the features, but am met with the subject error. Digging further it appears that the entire prnms009.inf folder is missing. I have tried to run DISM and SFC to no effect. I attempted to recover the folder from a computer where print to PDF is working, and then reinstall it on her computer, however, although the installation reports that it was completed successfully, it does not restore the print to PDF function. If I try to manually add a File print printer and tell it to use the above inf folder no viable printer appears to select and I'm unable to complete the dialog. After all of the above re-enabling it in features continues to give the subject error.

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform and thank you for posting your question!

You have described an issue where the Microsoft Print to PDF printer disappears after updating to Windows 11 24H2 and attempts to reinstall it trigger error 0x800f**.

Based upon your descriptions, I would like to provide some guidance that may help address this behavior.

    • Review CBS.log for Component Store Errors

The CBS.log file is the primary log for component servicing operations like feature updates and optional features.

You can find the log here: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

    1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
    2. Filter for errors related to Microsoft-Windows-Printing-PDFServices: findstr /i /c:"error" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs_errors.txt"
    3. Look for 0x800f or 0x800f0922/0x800f081f errors indicating component corruption.

If CBS.log shows errors adding the Microsoft Print to PDF feature, the component store may be damaged or missing optional packages.

    • Repair Windows Optional Features

If CBS.log shows servicing failures, try these repairs.

Reinstall Print to PDF via Optional Features

    1. Open Settings → Apps → Optional features → View features.
    2. Search for Microsoft Print to PDF → Install.
    3. If the install fails with 0x800f errors, continue with DISM repair.

    Repair Windows Component Store

Run the following commands in elevated PowerShell or CMD:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM repairs the component store using Windows Update.

    sfc /scannow

SFC repairs system files that may prevent feature installation.

    • Manually Reinstall Microsoft Print to PDF

    If the automatic method fails:

    1. Open Device Manager → Print queues → Confirm “Microsoft Print to PDF” is absent.
    2. Run: dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.FOD~0.0.1.0
    3. Reboot the PC and test printing to PDF.
    • Check for Known 24H2 Update Issues

In some 24H2 builds, optional printer features may fail to persist after servicing updates.

Ensure your system is on the latest cumulative update (LCU) for 24H2.

If the printer disappears after reboot, check Task Scheduler → Maintenance Tasks, as some post-update cleanup scripts can remove non-default devices.

Please let me know how it goes. Wishing you a successful resolution and a great day!
