Hello,

My team is having issues with the error message popping up saying Discard By Changes. It doesn't happen always and we cannot figure out what is causing this issue as it is not consistent.

Thank you for your help

Best,

Serena

    Dear Serena,

Good day and thanks for posting your issue in the forum.

Per description and screenshot provided by you, you may have the Check-In and Check-Out functionality enabled for some files.

Have you enabled this functionality on your SharePoint site files?

You could also try creating a new document library in the site and see the result.

It can help us to determine whether there is any problem with the current document library or not.

You could check the link below on how the check-in and check-out works.

Moreover, I would like to suggest checking the co-authoring functionality too because you mentioned happen occasionally if someone is co-authoring in the same file at the same time.

    Hello AJ,

    Thank you for your Reply.

This is occurring in a file that about some people are all editing in. Unfortunately, we cannot to the check in or check out method as they all need to be in the file at once due to timeline constraints. There are around 3-5 people in there at once.

In your link for troubleshooting common coauthoring errors, it says:

"Why this error happened: Your document can't be saved to the server because your edits can’t be merged with changes from others."

Is there a solution to this? The individuals in the file are updating their numbers in specific columns but do other things such as collapsing columns and filtering create this error message as well or is it only if let's say someone puts a number in the same cell as someone else?

Is this also dependent on who saves first? We have autosave enabled in our file and didn't think this would be an issue.

    Thank you for you help.

    Dear Serena,

    Thank you for the reply.

I have some few questions like:

    1. I suspect this issue is related with co-authoring feature, since you mentioned “There are around 3-5 people in there at once.” Sometime this error occurs if someone not using Office 365 apps or the Office version that’s does not support co-authoring feature. Firstly, we need to confirm does all the people using the same latest version of Office 365 app or not?
    2. Also, please double-confirm with us, all the people using Excel desktop client app to access the shared file?
    3. I would like to ask if the issue is only happening to a specific file or all the files? If possible, could you please create a new Excel file (for test purpose) and verify the result with us.

    Appreciate your understanding and patience.

    Sincerely,

    1. Yes I believe everyone is using the latest update as our company pushes the latest updates to us.
    2. Yes everyone has access to it and to the SharePoint folder in teams
    3. It is happening on a few different files and seems random.

    Thank you,

    Serena

    Dear Serena,

    Thank you for the reply.

As you also mentioned that the issue is happening with few excel file too and it’s random so in this case, I would recommend you contact your IT admin and raise a support ticket.

Let admin help you create a support ticket in Microsoft 365 Admin Center>Support>New service request.
