Unable to Drag and Drop Attachments from Outlook to Microsoft Teams

Hello,

Until recently, I was able to drag and drop email attachments directly from Microsoft Outlook into a Microsoft Teams chat or channel. However, this functionality suddenly stopped working.

Details:

  • Outlook and Teams are both desktop apps.
  • My system is running Windows 11 Business.
  • Dragging the file shows a blocked cursor.
  • This issue began recently and every time.

I have already tried:

  • Restarting Outlook and Teams
  • Updating both apps to the latest versions
  • Restarting my PC

Could this be due to a recent policy or feature update from Microsoft?

Are there any settings I can adjust to re-enable this functionality?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Dear @Catherine Jeong,

Good day! Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may encounter when using our services/ products. Based on your description:

The drag-and-drop functionality between New Outlook and New Teams desktop apps is currently not supported. While drag-and-drop works in Classic Outlook, the newer version lacks full integration for this feature.

Kindly try these following workaround steps:

    1. Switch to Classic Outlook

If you're using New Outlook, toggle back to Classic Outlook using the switch in the top-right corner. This version supports drag-and-drop into Teams.

    1. Save and Upload Manually

Open the email, click the ellipsis (...) > Save As, then drag the saved .eml file into Teams or SharePoint manually.

    1. Press ESC Multiple Times

A quirky but effective workaround: press the Escape key 3–4 times, then try dragging again. This can reset the drag-and-drop state in Windows.

    1. Avoid Admin Privileges Conflict

Ensure Outlook is not running with elevated privileges (i.e., as Administrator), which can block drag-and-drop between apps.

Drag-and-drop between Outlook accounts (e.g., from one mailbox to another) is being rolled out:

    • Targeted Release: Mid-July 2025
    • General Availability: Mid-September 2025
    • This feature allows users to drag emails and files between accounts as attachments, provided the OWAMailboxPolicy setting ItemsToOtherAccountsEnabled is set to TRUE
