New Outlook keeps changing the name of attachments to random letters and numbers when I try to save the file

As above...here is an example of what New Outlook did to my most recent attached Word document filename:

4eff2db5f108394df88cce15ac83e43d3e9472fc63d48f50f5cab343d76

Such a snappy file name!

I have no idea why it keeps doing this, but it is exceptionally annoying.

Old Outlook - never a problem.

Hello Peter. I completely understand your frustration with the new Outlook saving attachments as long, random strings rather than the name of the file you would expect. This has been a known problem for some time. The issue appears to be the way in which Outlook handles attachments when they are shared to OneDrive or handled through its new, unified attachment register. Instead of saving the attachment with the name of the file, Outlook creates a unique identifier, which resembles a hash value, especially when saving an attachment directly from the preview pane or when messages are cloud-linked.

To eliminate the risk of losing the original filename, follow these steps:

    • Open the email and right-click on the attachment, and click Save As instead of using the quick download button.
    • If it is attached from OneDrive, click Download in the preview section of OneDrive to keep the original file name.
    • When saving attachments, do not select them from the message preview pane, as this is where the filename issue occurs most often.

Let me know if this helps or if you have further questions.

    Best regards,

This also happens when I right click and open a file (in instances I might not want to save it). Is there a work around for this situation?

    sdmpp5,

Does this happen with a "traditional" file attachment or does it happen with a file which is attached as a OneDrive link?

Which version of Outlook are you running? The full version for Windows or MacOS? The new Outlook? Or the classic version? Or are you running a web version in your browser?

I am experiencing this issue as well, and the suggested “Save As” workaround is not a solution. It is unreasonable to expect users to save a file, navigate to the folder, and reopen it every time. This problem did not exist in previous versions of Outlook, so whatever change introduced this needs to be addressed. Please fix the underlying error instead of offering inadequate workarounds.
