Please share a zipped copy of the DRIVERS hive located at "c:\windows\system32\config\drivers".

You may share it on OneDrive and post the link here.

    Hi Léo Michel,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A regarding the issue with Windows updates failing due to error code 0x800f703f1.

This error is typically caused by a corrupted DRIVERS registry hive, which interferes with the update process. Based on your diagnostic steps, the registry load command confirmed this corruption.

To resolve the update issue, I recommend the following steps in order:

Step 1: Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM

These tools repair corrupted system files and Windows image components.

-Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

-Restart your deice to apply changes then check the update again.

Step 2: Reset Windows Update Components

Clear the update cache to remove any stuck or corrupted downloads:

    -In Command Prompt (Administrator), run:

    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits

-Restart then check once more time.

Step 3: Perform a Clean Boot

This helps isolate software conflicts that may be interfering with updates.

    • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    • Under Services, check "Hide all Microsoft services" and click Disable all.
    • Under Startup, open Task Manager and disable all items.

Restart your PC and try updating again.

*Disclaimer: A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get back on track.

Step 4: Perform an In-Place Upgrade

If the issue persists, I suggest performing an in-place upgrade using the Windows installation media. This will reinstall Windows while keeping your files and applications intact, and it can repair corrupted registry hives.

*Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides:
