I used group assignments and randomly assigned students in groups. I posted the assignment. However some students joined the teams class later. How can I add more groups to the existing assignment?

Is there any possibility of editing the groups or adding the groups?

On trying it says groups cannot be edited after the assignment has been posted. It would be nice if teams could take this as feedback and allow for editing groups or adding new groups to existing assignments.

There is also no easy way to tally which new students joined later and were not assigned the assignments. Please kindly provide any input that can make this possible.

Thanks

    Dear @Shivani Sachdev,

Good day! Welcome to Q&A forum!

Regarding your situation, according to this article: Create group assignments or assign to individual students - Microsoft Support, it is noted that "once an assignment has been distributed to students, you can no longer edit groups" and therefore, you wouldn't be able to edit the groups, add more groups or reassign the students who joined later to the existing assignment.

Therefore, if many students joined late and you want them to be part of the original groups, the best option is to delete and recreate the assignment with updated groups. This takes more time but keeps everything consistent.

Alternatively, you can create a separate assignment just for the new students or groups. It’s quicker, but you’ll need to set it up again from scratch.

About tracking students that joined late, unfortunately, Teams does not currently offer a built-in feature to easily tally which students joined after an assignment was posted. You may need to compare the class roster at the time of assignment creation with the current roster to know who the late joiners are.

About sending feedback to Microsoft, allowing group edits post-assignment is a common request among educators, and your input reinforces the need for this improvement. Therefore, here are my suggestions:

    • You could send your feedback via the Feedback Portal
    • You could upvote for this feedback that is similar to your inquiry
    • You could also submit your feedback within Teams app by clicking (…) next to your profile > Feedback > Suggest a feature
      • User's image

By sending your feedback, the product team would be able to investigate further and consider including this in future updates.

If possible, please kindly Accept this Answer as many users with the same concern would be able to find the answer quickly thanks to your experience. Thank you for your kindness and understanding.
