ClassNotebook creation error something went wrong retry

When trying to create a ClassNotebook in for a Team in the teams app or on the webbrowser one of my teams does not function properly. I get the message "something went wrong retry". I tried many times and also restarted my laptop but still unsuccessful. Please help.

I just answered my own question! This link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/create-a-class-notebook-in-onenote-5d30ac45-dc22-4399-a80a-700ce7d18d11 tells you that there is one more way to create a OneNote in Manage Notebooks. It works but teacher has to manually add the students.

We are still investigating if the Class notebook that was created from Manage Notebooks can be used with the students.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fix the “Something went wrong. Retry.” Error

Verify Team Type and Basic Checks

Make sure the team is created as a “Class” type (Class Team). Only this type supports Class Notebook.

If the team is set as “Staff” or “Standard,” this feature will not work properly.

Trigger Notebook Creation via the Assignments Tab

Go to the “Assignments” tab in the affected class team.

Create a new assignment (no need to post it).

In the attachment section, select “Class Notebook” and choose any section.

Then cancel the assignment creation.

Return to the Class Notebook tab and click “Set up Notebook” again.

Many users have confirmed this method successfully initiates notebook creation.

Clear Teams Cache and Retry

Reset the Teams app: Go to Settings > Apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced Options > Reset.

Manually clear cache: Sign out, quit Teams, go to the folder %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and delete cache files. Then restart Teams and sign in again.

Try using Teams in a private/incognito browser window to avoid cached web data.

Create Notebook Directly via OneNote

Visit https://www.onenote.com/classnotebook and sign in with your Office 365 account.

Use the wizard to create a new notebook, name the class, and optionally add teachers and students.

Once created, you’ll receive a link to open the notebook, and students will get an invitation email.

Integrate the Notebook into Teams

In the class team, click “+” to add a new tab.

Select OneNote > Paste the notebook link.

The notebook will appear as a tab in Teams, making it easy for students to acces

I can confirm that a manually created ClasNotebook works just as well as one that was created from Teams directly. We share the link to this Notebook with students in their MS Teams and ensure the names for both are identical. We just need to remember to manually update the OneNote for any new students.

Hi @Ryan N Thank you for helping me. I have tried your suggestions. I am getting closer to a solution.. So far I can create the ClassNotebook manually but really like the idea of making a new tab, or just FIXING the problem. My school does not know either what is wrong..

In New Private Window ( I guess this is what you mean by inkognito) I get the same error message as before if I try to set up the ClassNotebook.

I tried setting an assignment with a ClassNotebook attachment but I get a blank and cannot choose any sections.

I can add a new OneNote tab in teams (and have named it NewClassNotebook)- however I need some more help how to insert a link here. I can see copy link to tab, but this is the opposite of what I want to achieve. Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your detailed response — I truly appreciate your collaboration. Below is a step-by-step guide to insert the link to the ClassNotebook you manually created into a new OneNote tab in Teams:

Open the ClassNotebook in OneNote Online

Go to https://www.onenote.com and sign in with your school account.

Locate the notebook you manually created (e.g., “NewClassNotebook”).

Copy the Link to the Notebook

Open the notebook.

Click the “Share” button (usually in the top right corner).

Select “Copy Link” or “Copy Link to Notebook” (make sure it’s a link that allows students to view or edit, depending on your intent).

You’ll receive a URL that looks like:

https://your-school.sharepoint.com/.../NewClassNotebook

Go to Teams and Add the Link to the Tab

In your class team, navigate to the channel where you added the OneNote tab.

Click the “+” icon to add a new tab (or edit the existing OneNote tab).

This time, choose “Website” instead of “OneNote.”

Paste the copied link into the URL field.

Name the tab something like “ClassNotebook” or “Notebook Access.”

The notebook will be embedded directly into Teams as a tab. Students can click and interact with the notebook without leaving Teams.
