Power BI app for Teams

My Teams tenant is located in US, and my Power BI tenant is located in Canada. If Power BI app is used in Teams, how does the data from Canada flow? Would it flow through US? Or is the Power BI app through Teams just a browser-type load of PBI service?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi @09193364,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum support.

I wanted to provide some clarity regarding how data flows when using the Power BI app within Microsoft Teams, especially in scenarios where the Teams tenant is located in the US and the Power BI tenant is hosted in Canada.

When you use the Power BI app inside Microsoft Teams, while your Teams tenant is in the US and your Power BI tenant is in Canada, the data does not flow through the Teams tenant region. Instead, it behaves like a browser-based experience that connects directly to the Power BI service in its home region, in this case, Canada

The Power BI app in Teams is essentially a web wrapper of the Power BI service. When you open a report or dashboard in Teams, it loads the content directly from the Power BI tenant, respecting its data residency and compliance boundaries. Teams acts as a container or interface, not a data processor or rerouter.

This setup ensures that your data remains compliant with regional data policies and does not cross borders unnecessarily. It also means that any reports or dashboards viewed in Teams are still subject to the same security and governance controls as if they were accessed directly through the Power BI service.

When you're embedding Power BI reports in Teams channels or chats, users still need appropriate Power BI licenses and permissions to view the content.  Some features (like link previews or activity feed notifications) may behave differently depending on the cloud environment (e.g., GCC, national clouds).
