Attach OneNote page to Teams assignment - destination issues

When attaching a OneNote page to an assignment, I am asked for where to distribute the page. The assignment does not recognise Sections within Section Groups (in pupil areas) nor self-distributed sections. It says there are no sections available, despite each pupil having a distributed section, and section groups with sections inside.

Any fix?

    Hi @Stephanie George

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A.

I’m truly sorry for the frustrating experience you’ve encountered while trying to attach a OneNote page to a Teams assignment.

I’ve taken some time to look into this more deeply, and I came across a post from 2023 that describes a similar situation.

You can find more details here: Trouble creating assignments in Teams and distributing to sections within section groups - Microsoft Q&A
According to that thread, this appears to be a known limitation Teams assignments currently do not recognize sections inside Section Groups or manually distributed sections, even if they exist in each student’s notebook.

Unfortunately, I don’t have access to an education tenant to test this directly, and as of now, I haven’t found any official Microsoft documentation confirming whether this limitation has been resolved.

    Workarounds You Can Try:

You can try using the OneNote Class Notebook add-in for Teams to distribute pages or sections to your students’ notebooks.   This add-in allows you to distribute content to any section or section group, including those that may not appear in the Teams assignment interface.

Alternatively, you can use the OneNote Online app to distribute pages or sections.   It also supports distribution to sections and section groups that are not visible in Teams and may offer more flexibility.

You can find more details about distribution here: Distribute pages and sections to Class Notebooks - Microsoft Support

That said, I’ll continue monitoring this issue and will share any updates I find. If Microsoft releases new guidance or changes this behavior, I’ll make sure to let you know.

Thanks again for your patience and for bringing this to our attention.

I inadvertently found a solution to my issue.

Using the Manage feature on Class Notebook (through Teams or Browser), I distributed a new section. Once I had done this, when I went to set an assignment, I was able to see the section within my section group as well.

A happy accident, but a solution all the same!

    Hi @Stephanie George

It's wonderful news that the issue has been resolved and thank you so much for sharing it!

Your discovery is especially valuable because this issue has been quite tricky to pin down. I’ve searched through Microsoft’s official documentation, technical communities, and support channels, and there hasn’t been a clear answer or workaround published for this specific scenario. That makes your contribution all the more important.

You’re the first to share a working solution for this issue, and I believe many educators facing similar challenges will benefit from what you’ve found. Thank you for taking the time to follow up and share it with the community.

Therefore, I would make a brief summary of this post so that other forum members could easily find useful information here:

    Issue Description

When attaching a OneNote page to a Teams assignment, the interface did not recognize sections inside Section Groups or manually distributed sections, even though they existed in each student’s notebook. The system reported “no sections available.”

    Assessment

This behavior appears to be a limitation in how Teams Assignments currently detect available sections, especially when using OneNote for Windows 11.

    Solution

Using the Manage Notebook feature in Class Notebook (via Teams or browser), the user distributed a new section.  After doing this, the section inside the section group became visible in the assignment interface allowing the OneNote page to be attached successfully.

A happy accident, but a helpful workaround!

Thanks again for your contribution. If you found this helpful, feel free to mark it as an answer or upvote it’ll help others find the solution more easily.

    Warm regards,
