How to resolve issue with Teams constantly crashing

One employee in my organization is experiencing constant crashes or freezes in the Microsoft Teams desktop application.

This happens both in Windows 10 and Windows 11, and has consistently occurred across multiple devices

  1. Teams has been fully re-installed and the cache has been has been fully cleared on several devices
  2. A repair of WebView 2 runtime has been carried out
  3. Hardware acceleration has been disabled
  4. The issue occurs on Zoom as well, and at multiple locations (its not limited to WiFi)
  5. The user is not connected to any external organization via Teams

Are there any suggestions as to what may be the underlying cause of the issue?

    Hi @Vevers, Paul
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A.
You've already tried several important steps (reinstalling Teams, clearing cache, repairing WebView2, disabling hardware acceleration), which is great. Since the issue also affects Zoom and occurs on different networks and devices, it suggests the root cause may be deeper, possibly at the system or user profile level.

    • To help narrow this down, could you please share a bit more detail?
    • When do the crashes happen? (e.g., only during meetings or also when idle?
    • Have you checked Event Viewer or Teams logs for any error messages?
    • Have you tried signing in with a different account or using Teams Web?
    • Are your graphics and audio drivers fully updated?
    • Is there any antivirus or endpoint protection software running?

In the meantime, here are some steps you can try:

    1. Update GPU and Audio Drivers Teams and Zoom both rely on GPU acceleration for video. Outdated or incompatible drivers are a common cause of crashes. Use the latest drivers from the manufacturer (not just Windows Update). Check Microsoft's official: hardware decoder/encoder compatibility list
    2. Ensure WebView2 Runtime is Healthy Teams desktop uses WebView2 to render its UI. If WebView2 fails, Teams may crash. Download and reinstall WebView2 from Microsoft Edge WebView2. Check for WebView2-related crash codes like RESULT_CODE_GPU_DEAD_ON_ARRIVAL or RESULT_CODE_HUNG in Event Viewer or logs You can find more details here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/microsoftteams/teams-administration/resolve-teams-client-crash-issues#webview2-failure
    3. Whitelist Teams in Antivirus/DLP Software Non-Microsoft security tools may block or interfere with Teams and WebView2 processes. Ensure Teams and WebView2 are allowed in your antivirus/DLP settings. You can find more details here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/microsoftteams/teams-administration/resolve-teams-client-crash-issues#media-stack-technology-failure
    4. Try Teams Web or Create a New Windows Profile Use Teams Web to check if the issue is limited to the desktop client.
    5. Run system repair tools:
sfc /scannow DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Install Teams using the MSI installer: Download Teams MSI Installer

If all troubleshooting steps fail and the issue persists across devices and profiles, reinstalling Windows may help rule out deeper system-level issues.

    After reinstalling:

    • Install Teams first before other apps, this helps isolate whether Teams works properly in a clean environment.
    • Test Teams Web (https://teams.microsoft.com)
    • Avoid installing antivirus/DLP software initially. Test Teams before adding security tools, in case they interfere with WebView2 or video rendering.

If you need any further assistance or have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help. Thank you again for your patience and for choosing Microsoft Q&A forum.

Curious, was this resolved? I am having 2 users in my organization with the same issue, same model laptop (Dell Inc., Precision 5690). All steps above were taken.

To identify what's the root cause of the issue, Press Win+R, then type perfmon /rel and look for critical events exactly at the time Teams froze. Then, check the Faulting Module Name; that will tell you exactly why it crashed and help you resolve the issue.
