How to sync with google workspace calendar with teams without mail migration to outlook

Good afternoon, we're looking to have our google workspace calendars only sync with our microsoft teams calendars so that events created in google workspace show in the teams calendar and vice versa.

I have found the following help article: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/setup-calendar-syncing-with-google-workspace, but have a question.

  1. If we follow the portion of that article under the heading "Set up Google calendar synchronization" will that do what we want without migrating our email?
  2. I'm confused because the Microsoft Mail Migration and Calendar Sync app for install on google workspace seems to indicate it will do mail as well, is it an option not to?

We do not want to migrate our emails from google workspace to teams/outlook as it has presented problems in the past.

Thanks,

    Hi @Thomas Makowski,

Thank you for reaching out regarding calendar synchronization between Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams. I understand your goal is to enable calendar-only sync so that events created in Google Calendar appear in Teams (Outlook) and vice versa — without migrating email from Gmail to Outlook.

I’d be happy to clarify the process and address your questions.

Does the “Set up Google calendar synchronization” section do what you want?

Yes — following the steps under the “Set up Google calendar synchronization” heading in Microsoft’s documentation will achieve full two-way calendar sync between Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams without migrating email.

Microsoft confirms that this setup is calendar-only. Your Gmail messages will remain untouched unless you explicitly initiate a separate email migration process.

Why does the app mention mail migration — and can it be skipped?

The app you install from the Google Workspace Marketplace is called “Microsoft 365 Mail Migration and Calendar Sync”, which understandably causes confusion. However:

    • You can scope its permissions to calendar data only.
    • Microsoft clearly states: “Permissions granted in this setup are used solely for calendar synchronization. Email migration will not be initiated.”
    • Email migration is a separate opt-in process and will not occur unless you manually trigger it later.

it is absolutely possible to use this app only for calendar sync, and many organizations do so successfully.

    Important Notes

    • Only Google Workspace accounts with custom domains are supported (not personal Gmail).
    • Each user must have a Microsoft Teams license.
    • You can monitor sync status and resolve any issues (e.g., “user edits detected”) in the Teams Admin Center.

You can proceed with confidence using Microsoft’s official method. It will sync calendars both ways and will not migrate email unless you choose to do so separately.

If you have any updates regarding the issue, feel free to share them with me. In case you have any other questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to let me know. I’ll be here to support you.
