The app/web (both interfaces) gets stuck when copying an assignment from another class/team. How to resolve?

Have a new class team that is a copy of last year's class team. Any attempt to create a new task in this team using tasks from the previous team continues with a long (possibly infinite) wait for the copying process to finish without being able to press any button except to cancel the task creation process.

Desktop app and web (both) interfaces gets stuck.

A similar situation is observed this year in any class teams.

How to resolve?

    Hi @Василь Комаров,

I hope you're having a nice day. Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

You're describing a known and recurring issue in Microsoft Teams for Education - where the “Copy from existing class” feature when creating assignments causes the UI (both web and desktop) to freeze or hang indefinitely. This has affected many educators, especially at the start of a new academic year.

Here're some workarounds you can try to fix it:

    1. Use Assignment export/import instead of copying directly

    From the old team:

    • Go to the Assignments tab.
    • Click the three dots (...) next to the assignment you want.
    • Choose “Export to a .csv” or similar (depending on version).
    • Save the assignment content locally.

Then, in the new class team:

    • Go to Assignments.
    • Click “Create” > “From existing file” (if supported) or manually recreate using the exported content.

    2. Clear Microsoft Teams cache (for desktop app)

If you're using the desktop version of Teams, a corrupted cache often causes freezing.

Steps to clear the cache (Windows):

    • Fully quit Teams
    • Press Win + R, paste: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, then press Enter
    • Delete everything in this folder
    • Restart Teams.

    For Mac:

    • Quit Teams completely.
    • Go to ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/
    • Delete the contents.
    • Relaunch Teams.

    3. Use Teams Web in Incognito (Ctrl+Shift+N) or another browser

If the issue persists in your browser:

    • Open Microsoft Teams in Incognito / Private mode.
    • Or try another browser (Edge, Chrome, Firefox).

    4. Reduce complexity before copying

If the original class had many assignments with attached files, rubrics, or OneNote links, that increases the chance of freeze.

    • Go to the old class
    • Delete unused or large assignments
    • Then attempt the copy again with only minimal content.

    5. Report the issue via feedback or admin portal

Since you mentioned it affects all new class teams this year, this may be a wider regional or tenant-wide problem.

Ask your school or institution’s IT admin to:

    • Submit a support case through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
    • Include detailed steps to reproduce + affected teams.

Note: Please understand that our initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

I'm looking forward for your reply.

    Hi @Василь Комаров,

It's wonderful news that your issue has been resolved. I truly appreciate your effort in finding a resolution. I believe that many users may encounter similar issue, and your case could serve as a valuable reference for them.

Therefore, I would make a brief summary of this post so that other forum members could easily find useful information here:

    Issue Description:

When copying assignments from a previous class/team to a new class team in Microsoft Teams (both desktop app and web), the process gets stuck with a long or infinite wait. The only available action is to cancel the task creation. This issue occurs across multiple class teams.

    Assessment:

A bug in Teams for Education caused assignment copying to hang. After a global Teams update, copying works in some teams. Canceled copies may still appear in drafts. Exporting assignments to external files is not supported.

    Resolution:

The update partially fixed the issue. If copying takes a long time, wait - canceled copies may finish in the background. No export-to-file option exists. Keep Teams updated and contact support if problems continue.

As other users may search for similar issues in this forum, your post and solution will be a helpful reference. If you found this helpful, consider voting or marking it as a solution to make it easier for others to find.

We truly appreciate your time and cooperation throughout the resolution of this matter. Thank you for being a valued customer and for contacting us on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

If you need any other assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out again and I would be happy to help you.
