Unable to Access "Capture Text"/Document Scan Feature in Windows Camera When Accessed via Third-Party App – Surface Pro 9

Hello Microsoft Support,

I am using a Surface Pro 9 with the built-in Windows Camera app. When I open the Camera app directly, I can see the "Capture Text" or "Document Scan" mode (the mode that intelligently detects and scans documents, similar to a document scanner).

However, when I try to access the Camera functionality through a third-party application or a custom application (that invokes the Windows camera), this specific "Capture Text" or document scanning feature is not available — it defaults to the regular photo/video mode.

Could you please clarify:

Is the "Capture Text" or document scan feature exclusive to the native Windows Camera app?

Is there a way to enable or access this feature when using the camera through another app?

Are there specific APIs, libraries, or settings required to use this document scanning functionality outside the default Camera app?

I would appreciate guidance on how to achieve the same functionality in custom or third-party applications, or if it is currently a limitation.

Thank you,

Sivakumar Jayaraman

Is "Capture Text" exclusive to the Windows Camera app?

Yes, it is. The "Capture Text" and document scanning mode in the Windows Camera app is a feature-level enhancement built specifically into that application.

Why third-party apps don't have access?

Windows camera APIs only expose the standard photo/video stream. So, third party app don't have access.
