Surface Pro 9 Won't Start After Firmware Update

Assistance is needed for a Surface Pro 9 that is unable to start after the latest firmware update from the Windows 11 update center.

All key combinations for restarting and restoring have been attempted, but access to the UEFI is not possible. The Surface logo appears briefly before reverting to a black screen, making it impossible to launch Windows or restore the operating system.

Additionally, a service or repair request has been attempted, but the quoted cost is 901 CAD$, which seems excessive considering the original purchase price of 1699 CAD$.

Questions include:

  • Why is the repair cost so high for an issue caused by a Microsoft firmware update?
  • Will payment be required before or after the repair?
  • Are there alternative methods to restore the device, such as flashing the BIOS like on other laptops?

Thank you for any guidance on this matter.

Thank you Aron for your answer and the link you provide.

    To reply to your questions:

    1. The device was plugged during the firmware update and it complete without interruption
    2. I connected an external display and nothing was displayed, not even the windows logo.
    3. The Surface Pro doesn't show any abnormal behaviour (Temp, noise... are as usual)
(The surface logo appear briefly as Indicated earlier).
    4. With the link you kindly provided me, I was able to create and test a USB recovery
drive using the official Surface recovery image.
Unfortunately, this did not help. The problem remains the same.
    5. Unfortunately the device is no longer under warranty.

I have investigate a little bit deeper to describe the problem, here are the results:

    • When I power on the Surface Pro 9, the windows logo is displayed (the 4 white square)
    • It remains displayed around 9 seconds, (9 sec - approx elapsed time since switching on)
    • then it flashes once quickly
    • and logo remains displayed for again 9 seconds, (18 sec - approx time since switching on)
    • then it flashes once quickly
    • and logo remains displayed for again 9 seconds, (27 sec - approx time since switching on)
    • then it flashes once quickly
    • Around 9 second later the display goes black (36 sec - approx time since switching on)

(With an external display connected, this one remain black - no signal input - but
the Surface Pro screen keeps showings the same sequence as described above)

This is the exact description of the boot sequence since the firmware update failed.

None of the tests carried out with the recovery USB recovery key provided a solution to this problem.

I am afraid my Surface Pro it's permanently down. If anyone has any suggestions for resolving this issue, their feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi kisou_mdr,

I understand how difficult it is when your device stops working after a routine update. Let’s find the best way to get your Surface Pro 9 running again without unnecessary cost. I’m here to help.

The issue likely stems from a failed firmware update that corrupted the UEFI, preventing the Surface from booting or accessing recovery tools. Since this happens below the OS level, normal recovery methods won’t work.

May I know if your device is still under warranty?

If your Surface device isn’t turning on, USB recovery may still be possible under certain conditions. First, try entering recovery mode by holding Volume Down + Power (or Volume Up + Power, depending on the model). Even if the screen stays black, the device might still boot from a USB recovery drive, just give it a few seconds. Look for signs that the device is responsive, such as fan noise, warmth, the charging light turning on, keyboard backlight, or a brief Surface logo when the USB is inserted. If none of these signs are present, no lights, sounds, or heat, then USB recovery won’t work, as the device likely isn’t powering on at all. In that case, the issue is probably hardware-related, such as a faulty battery or motherboard, and professional repair may be needed.

Here is the link for the USB Recovery Method: Surface Recovery Image Download – Microsoft Support

To help diagnose your Surface Pro 9 issue, consider these quick checks: Was the device plugged in during the firmware update, and did it complete without interruption? Have you tried an external display to rule out screen failure? Does the device show any signs of life like fan noise, keyboard backlight, or the Surface logo? Have you tested a USB recovery drive using the official Surface recovery image? Lastly, is your device still under warranty or covered by Microsoft Complete? These details can help guide the next steps.

You're on the right track, troubleshooting can be tough, but with the right steps, there's a good chance your Surface Pro 9 can recover. Keep going.
