Why does a submission on Teams Assignment say student can edit for one student but not another?

Hi there,

I'm hoping that someone can help? A teacher has set up an assignment in a Class Team and selected that students can edit their own copy of the attached file. A student (Student A) has submitted 3 documents and selected the Turn-in button as the assignment status is Turned In. When you look at this submission, you can see the statement underneath each document that 'student can still edit this file' See Student A screenshot below.

However Student B has also turned in their documents, but the same edit statement does not appear against either of these documents (see Student B screenshot below).

Can anyone advise why the edit statement would appear for one student and not another? I've looked at the SharePoint for the Team and in submitted student work folder for Student A there are multiple versions and Student B only has the 2 original files submitted. Could this be a reason why Student A has the edit statement as they are editing the document/have edited the document but not selected re-do turn in?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mel

    Hi @Mel Newell

    Welcome to Q&A Community!

Thank you for contacting us regarding the behavior you observed in Microsoft Teams Assignments.

The message “Student can still edit this file” is expected and relates to how the Turn in process works in Teams. When a student clicks Turn in, the assignment status changes to Turned in, but the attached file remains editable until the teacher grades or returns the assignment. This design allows students to make corrections or updates before grading is finalized.

    In your scenario:

    • Student A likely continued editing after turning in or used the Undo Turn in feature and then resubmitted. This explains the multiple versions you noticed in SharePoint and why the edit message appears.
    • Student B submitted the files without further edits, so the message does not display.

This difference is normal and does not indicate an error. Teachers can review version history in SharePoint or OneDrive to confirm any post-submission edits.

For more details, please refer to the official Microsoft article: Turn in an assignment in Microsoft Teams

I hope the given information clearly explains the situation. Please let us know if you need further assistance or have further concerns. I am happy to assist you further.
