Hello @Joe Strydom,
Good day! Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.
Based on your description, I understand that you're looking for is a way to create a new Planner plan in Microsoft Teams using an existing plan as a template, but ensuring that the new plan is independent, so changes to it won’t affect the original.
Kindly let me know if I’ve misunderstood any aspect of your idea.
You can create a new plan in Planner and use it as a template, but to make it available for copying, you must first add that plan to a Microsoft 365 group. Here are the steps you can take to create it:
- Open your Planner (in Microsoft Teams or on the web)
- Navigate to My plan > Select New plan. You can create your own custom plan or choose a provided template. Name your plan and choose Create.
- After creating your plan, select “View and Invite members” (this may appear as a “Share” button depending on your interface). You’ll have the option to either:
- Create a new Microsoft 365 group (if your role allows it), or
- Add the plan to an existing group.
- Note: If you have permission to create Microsoft 365 groups and intend to use the plan as a personal template, you can skip the member invitation step and simply create a new group with only yourself as a member.
- After that, if you want to copy this template to any group, you can click the down arrow button next to your plan name > Choose Copy plan
- Once you've selected the group you want to copy the plan to, click “Copy” to create a new plan based on the original. This new plan will be independent and won't affect the source plan.
