Hey,

On my windows laptop when my external hard drive was plugged in. I have been promoted to encrypt my hard drive. Once the setup is done it asked me to enter the password to unlock the hard drive. Inspite of entering the right password it still throwing incorrect password error. So I tried using my recovery key which I saved as a printout. Even the recovery key on the printout is not accepted as a valid input. I entered valid recovery key for the same key Id shown on the prompt box but still the bitlocker is not accepting my input. Please help me recover data from my external hard drive.

I tried all the cmd commands to unlock my hard disk but none worked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Dear Harshil Kyada,

Based on your description, here are Recommended Steps to Recover Access

    1. Confirm Recovery Key Format and Entry

Ensure the recovery key is entered exactly as printed, including all 48 digits and hyphens

    Avoid spaces or extra characters

Double-check that the Key ID shown on the prompt matches the one printed

    2. Use BitLocker Management Tool Try unlocking the drive using Command Prompt with administrative privileges:

    cmd

    manage-bde -unlock X: -RecoveryPassword YOUR-48-DIGIT-KEY

Replace X: with your external drive letter and YOUR-48-DIGIT-KEY with the full recovery key.

    3. Check for System Changes BitLocker may fail to recognize keys if:

The drive was encrypted on a different system

Hardware changes (e.g., motherboard replacement) altered the encryption context

Secure Boot or TPM settings were modified

Try unlocking the drive on the original system where encryption was performed, if possible.

    4. Disable Secure Boot Temporarily Some users have resolved BitLocker access issues by disabling Secure Boot in BIOS:

Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI settings

Locate Secure Boot and set it to Disabled

Save changes and retry unlocking the drive

    5. Use BitLocker Recovery Tools If standard methods fail, consider using third-party recovery tools such as:

    I BitLocker Recovery

M3 BitLocker Recovery These tools specialize in recovering data from inaccessible BitLocker drives. Please note that Microsoft does not officially endorse third-party software, so use at your discretion.
