Hi @Chris Norman
Thank you for posting your question in the Q&A Forum.
I understand how frustrating it can be when audio issues interrupt your calls. The behavior you describe, where the system-level mute on macOS disables the application's audio and requires manual intervention to restore it, is typically related to how certain conferencing applications handle their default audio settings.
Here are a couple of effective solutions you may want to try:
Resetting the Application's Default Audio Setting
This approach ensures the application saves and recalls the correct audio output settings when you join a call.
- Navigate to the Calendar section within your conferencing application.
- Click on "Meet Now" or a similar option to initiate the pre-join screen.
- Before joining, select the "Computer Audio" option, ensuring you are not selecting an option that indicates "no audio".
- Click "Join now" to save the setting, and then immediately leave the test call.
The application should now reliably recall the correct audio output as the default for all future calls, eliminating the need for manual adjustment.
Instant Audio System Restoration
If you are stuck mid-call with no sound, you can reset the macOS audio engine (the Core Audio process) without restarting the entire application:
- Open Terminal (Found in Applications/Utilities).
- Execute the following command (you'll need to enter your admin password):
sudo killall coreaudiod
This will restart the audio system and often resolve the issue without requiring a full application restart.
Let us know if these steps help resolve the issue, or if you'd like assistance walking through them. We're happy to help further.
