On 02 October 2025, my client attempted to install Windows update KB5065426.

There was an install error: 0x800f0922 Attempts to remedy the issue as follows: run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt: Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at windir\logs\cbs\cbs.log.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated command prompt: The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully. Reboot. Blue screen: Stop code: 0xc000021a

Waited for the next patch day to drop. Computer will blue screen repeatedly during this wait.

On 10/28/2025 attempt to install Windows update KB5066835 install error. 0x800f081f

We do not want to try an in place upgrade on this device. the last time we attempted this, it deleted all of the apps and app settings for the user.

    Dear Douglas Griffith,

The combination of update failures and persistent blue screens suggests underlying system corruption or configuration conflicts that may not be fully resolved by standard repair tools. The errors:

0x800f0922 often indicate issues with system reserved partitions or connectivity to Windows Update services.

0x800f081f typically points to missing or inaccessible update files or components.

The Stop code 0xc000021a is associated with critical system process failures, often triggered by incompatible drivers, corrupted system files, or failed updates.

To move forward without performing an in-place upgrade, we suggest the following:

    1. Review CBS and DISM Logs Examine C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log for specific file or component failures. These logs may reveal which packages or files are blocking the update.
    2. Perform a Targeted Component Reset Run the following commands from an elevated prompt:
      • cmd
             Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ```

This may reduce update conflicts by removing superseded components.

    1. Temporarily Disable Third-Party Security Software Antivirus or endpoint protection tools can interfere with update processes. Disable them during update installation and re-enable afterward.
    2. Manual Installation via Update Catalog Download the standalone update packages from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Install them manually to bypass Windows Update mechanisms.
    3. Consider a Repair Install with Safeguards While we understand your concerns, a repair install using the “Keep apps and files” option may restore system integrity without data loss. We recommend creating a full system backup beforehand and testing on a similar device if possible.
