How to Stop MS Teams Launching at Startup and Reinstalling itself.

Windows 11

I have tried everything that has been recommended on this site and others.

I have turned off autostart for Teams.

all that happens is the App turns Auto start back on. I have uninstalled Teams

all that happens is that Teams reinstalls itself automatically the nexxt time I turn on my device.

My device BTW is a Surface Go 2, an MS device. Not sure if that's the reason. Every time I turn on my device, MS Teams slows it way down, interfering with everything else, and I can't do my work for about 5 mins.

It's a dysfunctional app -- no where near as good as Zoom.

I would like to just get rid of it -- stop it from reinstalling itself every time I uninstall.

But at the very least , I would like it to stop thwarting my work by starting itself evey time I turn on my Surface Go 2.

HELP!!!!

    Dear @Justitia Pax,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand that Teams keeps reinstalling and launching every time you start your Surface Go 2, especially when it slows things down and interrupts your work. And you’ve tried turning off auto-start and uninstalling Teams, but it keeps coming back and interfering with your startup experience.

This behavior is usually caused by two things:

    • A background installer from Microsoft Office called the Teams Machine-Wide Installer, which automatically reinstalls Teams for each user.
    • Windows 11’s built-in Chat feature, which is powered by Teams and may reinstall the app during updates or restarts.

To better assistance, could you please confirm following information:

    • Do you currently have Microsoft Office installed on your device?
    • Are you signed in with a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account?
    • Have you ever used Teams for work or school on this device?
    • Do you see a “Chat” icon on your taskbar?
    • Have you recently installed any Windows updates or repaired Office?

In the meantime, I recommend some steps below:

    1. Uninstall All Teams Components

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
    • Uninstall both:
      • Microsoft Teams
      • Teams Machine-Wide Installer
    • If you see Microsoft Teams (free) or Teams Chat, uninstall those too.

    2. Disable Windows 11 Chat

    • Right-click your taskbar and select Taskbar Settings.
    • Toggle Chat to Off. This prevents Windows from reinstalling the personal version of Teams.

    3. Disable Auto-Start

    • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Startup tab.
    • If Teams is listed, right-click and choose Disable.

    4. Optional: Remove Leftover Files

    • Check C:\Program Files (x86)\Teams Installer and delete the folder if it still exists.
    • Open services.msc and disable any service named “Teams Installer” if present.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you for your cooperation.
