Why can't my Edge browser restart automatically after an update?

After I finish downloading the update in the settings and click the restart button, the browser closes automatically but fails to open up again on its own. Moreover, I cannot open the browser manually at this point—I have to manually end the browser's process in Task Manager before I can launch it.

This issue has persisted across several versions and still exists in the latest one. My current browser version is 142.0.3595.65, and my Windows version is 25H2 26200.7019.

Thanks for sharing the details, Zhang! Have you tried to disable background apps in your browser? If not yet, here's how:

Disable background apps in your browser

    Open your browser.

    • Go to: Settings then System then Continue running background apps when closed

    Turn this OFF.

    Then restart your PC.

This prevents the leftover background update process from staying alive after restart.

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly

Got that. This time try to kill stale processes automatically.

    Press Win + R, type:

    taskkill /IM chrome.exe /F

    taskkill /IM crashpad_handler.exe /F

    taskkill /IM update.exe /F

If you’re using Edge, replace chrome.exe with msedge.exe.

Then try reopening the browser. To make sure it doesn't happen again, disable the browser's scheduled auto-update task.

Press Win + R, type taskschd.msc, and hit Enter.

    Go to:

    • Task Scheduler Library → Google → Update (for Chrome)
    • or Microsoft → EdgeUpdate (for Edge)

In the right pane, right-click both:

    • GoogleUpdateTaskMachineUA
    • GoogleUpdateTaskMachineCore and choose Disable.

Now, you’ll update Chrome manually by visiting chrome://settings/help when you want.
