stop spam calendar invites in Outlook 2021

I have Microsoft® Outlook® 2021 MSO (Version 2510 Build 16.0.19328.20144) 64-bit.

I keep getting spam calendar invites that automatically add themselves to my calendar.

I can add the sender to junk, but the next day they will just use a different email and...

Deleting the email doesn't delete the appointment.

Again: Deleting the email doesn't delete the appointment!

So I have to go through several steps to be sure to delete it without accidentally declining it.

Under Calendar Settings, I do not see an option to only add requests from my contacts to my calendar or to not automatically add things to my calendar.

Is there no way to make these stop?

I'm about to delete my calendars completely.

    @Patrick Norton

Microsoft is aware of the problem but there is currently no fix. There are no Rules you can create or settings you can change in the Outlook client that will stop these SPAM Calendar Events.

FWIW, this issue has been reported to Outlook Engineering, they are aware of the problem, and are investigating it.

    Hi Patrick,

Thank you for sharing your question. Sorry to hear you're getting slammed with spam calendar invites in Outlook 2021. Let’s sort this together.

Based on my knowledge, Outlook automatically puts calendar events from emails onto your calendar, even if you haven't said yes to them. It’s supposed to be helpful, but spammers are using it to their advantage.

Here’s what you can do to stop the spam.

First, turn off the auto-add thing for events from email. This is easier to find on Outlook.com, but it might not be right there on your Outlook 2021 desktop app. If you sync with Outlook.com or Microsoft 365, here's what you do.

Head to Outlook.com in your browser. Click the gear thing (Settings) > View all Outlook settings. Then go to Calendar > Events from email.

Change each category to Don’t show event summaries in email or on my calendar.

That should stop events from being added automatically.

Also, try not to touch the spam invites. Don’t click accept or decline or even open them. If you do, it tells spammers your email is real, and they'll send even more junk. Instead,

Right-click the invite and hit Delete without sending a reply. Go to Junk > Block Sender to stop more invites from that person. Make a rule to send weird invites to your Junk or Deleted Items folder based on certain words or domains.

If you don’t sync Outlook 2021 with Outlook.com, some of these options might not be there. If that’s the case, try setting up rules in Outlook to filter meeting invites from people you don’t know.

Are you hooked on an Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 account? If so, you might have more settings to play with.

I hope this answer is helpful, if you have any questions, feel free to reply.

    Best Regard,

    Noel

SPAM Calendar Events - Update 2025-12-05 - Still an ongoing issue. No update from Microsoft on a general solution.

If your organization has a Microsoft Defender for Office 365 subscription, there are steps your IT Admin can take to mitigate the impact:

If you are in an IT Managed environment, there are Mail Flow Rules that your IT Admin can implement that will block all external Calendar invites (and allow for specific exceptions):
