    Hi @Cynthia Zhang [Student]

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description and the image, I understand that you're facing a frustrating issue where all your equations in a Word document turn bold every time you reopen it, even after updating your Word software.

I've tried to reproduce this in my test environment, but I'll need a bit more information about your setup to narrow down the cause.

    • Does this happen with every file that has equations, or is it isolated to just this one document?
    • What version of macOS are you currently using?
    • What is the specific version of Word you are running?

In the meantime, this could be an issue with the document's default style being corrupted. Please try this troubleshooting step:

Please clear Bold Formatting from the Style> then, go to the Home tab > Click the Styles Pane button > In the pane that appears, find the style you are using (it's often just "Normal") > Click the dropdown arrow, and select Modify Style > In the formatting options, look for the B (Bold) button. Make sure it is NOT toggled on > Click OK > Save the file, completely close Word, and then reopen the file after a few minutes.

Please give that a try and let me know if it works, and if you can provide the extra information about your software versions.

Check the document's style update settings. In the Windows version this is found under the Developer Tab > Document Template. It may also be under Word Add-Ins.

Is the setting checked to Update Styles from Document Template checked? If so, clear that.
