How can you merge TEAMS chats when you have same people in multiple chats.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to merge TEAMS chats? We currently have four different TEAMS threads with the same group of people but with slightly different names, which is causing confusion:

remove PII

remove PII

remove PII

remove PII

It’s becoming frustrating, and it would make life much easier if we could merge these chats into one, transfer the content, and archive the others.

If anyone has suggestions or knows of a workaround, it would be greatly appreciated. We’re constantly checking multiple chats to make sure we haven’t missed the latest or most urgent message.

Currently, Microsoft Teams does not support merging chats directly. Each chat thread is separate, and there is no built-in feature to combine them into one. However, you can consider the following workarounds:

    1. Create a New Chat: Start a new chat with the same participants and inform them to use this new thread moving forward. You can copy important messages from the existing chats into the new one if needed.
    2. Use Channels: If the chats are related to a specific project or topic, consider creating a channel within a Team. Channels can help organize discussions better and keep all relevant information in one place.
    3. Pin Important Chats: You can pin the most important chat to the top of your chat list for easier access, reducing the need to check multiple threads.
    4. Regular Updates: If you decide to keep multiple threads, consider summarizing key points from each chat and sharing them in a single thread to keep everyone informed.

These methods can help reduce confusion until a feature for merging chats is potentially introduced in the future.

    Hi @Sarah Lucas,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Microsoft Teams currently doesn’t provide a way to merge multiple group chats or move chat history into a single thread. Each chat is treated as an independent conversation, so there’s no option to consolidate them while keeping past messages intact.

Here are some workarounds you can consider:

    1. Start a new unified chat and pin it
    • Create a new group chat that includes all participants.
    • Use a clear, consistent name
    • Pin this chat for easy access and let everyone know it will serve as the official thread going forward.
    1. Bring over key content
    • Copy and paste important messages or files from the old chats into the new one.
    • Alternatively, upload documents to a shared OneDrive or Teams channel and share the link in the new chat.
    1. Consider a Team or Channel
    • If these discussions are ongoing and involve collaboration, set up a Team with a dedicated channel for the Planning Committee.
    • Channels help organize conversations and files in one place, reducing confusion.
