Plethora of issues relating to windows and possibly security.

I'm not sure where to start.

My brother downloaded something shady yesterday (The file is named "Easy-master"), which I found to have downloaded quite a lot of stuff. I believe I managed to remove it all; however, my laptop is now experiencing a plethora of issues that I believe are related either to this download or to each other.

I don't know what information is needed, so I'll just go through it all.

OS- Windows 11 Home

System model- ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506NF_FA506NF

The Windows Update section comes up with the "Something went wrong. Try to reopen settings later" message. which prompted me to check 'Services' and 'Device Manager'.

All the following services are running:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

Cryptographic Service

Windows Installer

Update Orchestrator service

Windows Modules Installer

The following services are not running, not for a lack of trying:

Delivery Optimisation (The delayed auto-start flag could not be reset. Error 5: Access is denied)

Windows Update (Windows could not start the Windows Update service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion)

In Device Manager, Firmware> System Firmware has a warning sign, and the Device status is "This device cannot start. (Code 10) - Firmware update was unsuccessful."

This is the only device that may not be up to date.

(Possibly not connected to other issues.)

In addition;

The Windows Key has stopped working entirely, which is making it almost impossible to fix these problems. (Gaming mode is off)

The screen becomes unresponsive at random intervals. I am able to move the mouse and interact with CTRL ALT DELETE and its menu. I am able to select 'Task manager', but I am unable to interact with its interface.

The search function to the right of the Windows icon "search indexing was turned off - Turn indexing back on"

Which again prompted me to go to services:

"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer. - Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable."

Both RPC and RPC Locator are running and Automatic.

I have done full searches on Virus and threat protection with the Windows Security and MalwareBytes. No current threats or actions needed since the latest scan.

Both Windows security and the subsequent check on MalwareBytes caught and quarantined a count of 10+. Since installing MalwareBytes, I can't see exactly what it was, but one item could not be quarantined.

I am unable to delete the actual folder "easy-master" - "Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)", and it is on a continuous "preparing to recycle". If I try to interact with it by right-clicking it, my laptop bugs out, sometimes black screens the background, removes the hotbar and causes the screen to be unresponsive the same way it does at random intervals. If it does this, it later re-highlights and does it again.

I have also done a check with cmd /scannow

Results of the first scan:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at

windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline

repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

Results of the second scan:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I would like to avoid doing a full reset if possible, as I don't have the knowhow to do so, and I have files that aren't able to be backed up.

I apologise if any of this information was not necessary or if there is missing information.

    Hi @Creep3rion

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding your issue, I understand you're dealing with severe system instability after removing some shady software. The symptoms failed services, broken Windows Update, and the persistent "easy-master" folder can indicate deep system damage.

Here are a few steps you can try before considering a full factory reset:

    1. Delete "easy-master" safely

The “easy-master” folder that won’t delete means something is still running. Here’s what to do:

    Restart in Safe Mode

    • Hold Shift + Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart > Press 4 (Enable Safe Mode).
    • In Safe Mode, locate easy-master and delete it, if it's still stuck use Shift + Delete.
    • Restart your PC normally.

For more details, please refer to: Windows Startup Settings.

    1. Run Windows Troubleshooters
    • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Run:  Windows Updates, Keyboard, Search and Indexing
    • User's image

For more details, please refer to: Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    1. Reset PC
    • Open Settings > System > Recovery.
    • Under "Recovery options," click the Reset PC button.
    • Select the option: Keep my files (your personal files e.g., documents, photos will remain, but apps and settings will be removed)
    • Choose Cloud download (recommended for the freshest files) or Local reinstall
    • Confirm the process. This will take some time, but it installs a clean copy of Windows while saving your personal data.

For more details, please refer to: Reset your PC

If the problem still persists after everything we’ve tried, the only remaining solution is a full factory reset. This will completely reinstall Windows and return your PC to its original state.

Hopefully it will help with your issue and please give it a try and update for me to know if it helps.
