Channel Creation with Restricted Interaction (Reactions Only, No Replies)

I intend to create a new channel in Microsoft Teams that will primarily serve as an information platform. I plan to post regular updates there, but the channel is not intended for discussions or general exchange among members.

My question is whether there is a setting that allows me, as a channel owner, to configure my posts in such a way that only reactions (icons) are permitted, but no textual replies or comments from other members.

If such a feature exists, I would appreciate it if you could inform me where exactly I can find this setting and how to enable or disable it.

Thank you in advance for your support.

    Hello @Katja,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

While Teams does not currently have a feature that allows “reactions only” with replies completely disabled by default, there is a workaround that gets very close to your expectation by using Channel moderation

Here’s how you can configure it:

    • Go to the channel and select More options (…) > Manage channel

    • Under Channel moderation, select On. When channel moderation is turned on, only moderators can start new posts.

    • After enabling moderation, go to Team member permissions and uncheck Allow members to reply to channel messages. This will prevent members from replying to posts while still allowing them to use reactions (icons).

    Important notes:

    • Channel moderation is available only for standard channels on Teams for desktop or web. It is not available for the General channel or private channels, so if you need this setup, please create a new standard channel.
    • Only Team owners can manage channel settings and enable moderation. If you do not see these options, please check your role or contact your IT admin for assistance.

For detailed steps and additional options, please refer to this official guide: Change moderator roles and settings in a channel in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support

Currently, this is the closest solution available to meet your requirement. I hope this helps you achieve your goal, and I truly appreciate your effort to keep the channel organized and focused. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to let me know, I’m happy to assist as much as possible.

    Best regards,

Currently, Microsoft Teams does not provide a specific setting that allows channel owners to restrict interactions to only reactions while disabling textual replies or comments. The interaction model in Teams channels typically allows members to reply to posts, and there are no built-in features to limit responses to reactions only.

If you want to create a channel primarily for information sharing without discussions, you might consider using a standard channel and clearly communicating the intended use to the members. Alternatively, you could explore using the All Company community in Viva Engage, which allows for restricted posting where only admins can start conversations, but this does not apply directly to Teams channels.

For more detailed management of Teams settings and features, you can refer to the Microsoft Teams documentation for policies and settings management.
