Have Microsoft Money 2007 on my old laptop. I copied the Money CD to a flash drive since the new Laptop has no CD drive. I was able to load the copied files to my new Laptop hard drive. I did run the install file but not finding the proper execute file. I have a lot of personal files to transfer if I can get Money to work.

To install Microsoft Money on your new laptop, ensure that you have copied all necessary installation files from the Money CD to your flash drive. When you run the installation file, it should typically be named something like setup.exe or similar. If you cannot find the executable file, check the following:

    1. File Structure: Make sure that you have copied the entire contents of the CD, not just specific files. Sometimes installation files are located in subfolders.
    2. Compatibility: Since you are using Microsoft Money 2007, ensure that your new laptop's operating system is compatible with this version of Money. You may need to run the installer in compatibility mode if you are using a newer version of Windows.
    3. Installation Process: After locating the correct executable file, double-click it to start the installation process. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
    4. Accessing Files: Once installed, you should be able to open Microsoft Money and access your personal files if they were transferred correctly.

If you continue to have issues, consider checking forums or support sites for additional troubleshooting steps specific to Microsoft Money.

    Dear @Bob Drumm,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may encounter when using our services/ products. Based on your description, kindly try these following steps:

    Make a proper installer source

Copying the CD’s files to a flash drive often breaks the installer because it expects an optical-disc layout. Do this instead:

    • Create an ISO image of the Money 2007 CD on any PC that has a CD/DVD drive (use built‑in tools like “Create ISO” in many burning apps, or PowerShell/third‑party tools).
    • Move the ISO to your new laptop and Mount it (File Explorer > right‑click > Mount).
    • Run setup.exe from the mounted virtual drive.

If installation succeeds but you “cannot find the proper executable”

After a successful install, Money typically places the app here:

    • 64‑bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money 2007\msmoney.exe
    • 32‑bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2007\msmoney.exe

If it is missing, the install likely failed due to the copied‑files approach. Reinstall using the ISO method above.

Make Money 2007 behave on Windows 10/11

Money 2007 is old and relies on Internet Explorer components. These tweaks are known to help:

    • Compatibility mode: Right‑click msmoney.exe > Properties > Compatibility
      • Check Run this program as administrator
      • Set Compatibility mode to Windows XP (SP3) or Windows 7
      • Check Disable fullscreen optimizations and Change high DPI settings > Override high DPI scaling (Application)
    • Disable online sign‑in features: If your file was linked to a Passport/Live ID, modern sign‑in will fail. Use the Sunset edition (see next section) or ensure your file opens without online services.

    Move your data safely

    • On the old laptop, open Money and create a backup (.mbf): File > Backup.
    • Copy the .mbf (or your working .mny) to the new laptop.
    • In Money (2007 or Sunset), use File > Restore (for .mbf) or File > Open (for .mny).
    • If you see sign‑in prompts or “cannot verify” messages, switch to Sunset and restore/open there. These sign‑in verification failures are expected on modern Windows; Sunset avoids them.

    Further steps

    • Repair install: Uninstall Money, reboot, reinstall using the mounted ISO.
    • New user profile: Try installing and running Money under a fresh Windows user profile to eliminate profile‑level corruption.
    • Virtual machine fallback: Create a Windows 7 VM, install Money 2007 there, open/convert your file, then move to Sunset on the host OS.
