Hello Microsoft Support Team,

I’m trying to register for the Microsoft 365 Developer Program using my personal Microsoft account, but I’m receiving the following error:

“Your phone number is already associated with an existing developer account. Error Code: 40901”

This number is currently linked to my company account ([Moderator note: personal info removed]), which does not qualify for a sandbox subscription. I would like to request that my phone number be unlinked from the company account so I can use it with my personal account to create a sandbox.

Here is the MS-CorrelationId from the error screen: [paste it here if available]

Thank you for your help!

To resolve the issue of your phone number being linked to an existing developer account, you will need to delete your current Microsoft 365 Developer Program account associated with that phone number. According to the Microsoft 365 Developer Program FAQ, you can only have one developer program account associated with your phone number. If you need to set up a new account, you must delete your existing account first.

To delete your account, sign in to your dashboard and choose Delete Profile. After deleting your account, you can register for the developer program using your personal Microsoft account with the same phone number, but note that you can only do this after your existing subscription has been active for more than 60 days.

If you continue to face issues or need further assistance, consider reaching out to Microsoft support directly for help with unlinking your phone number from your company account.

    Hi @Davide Redemagni

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how frustrating this situation can be, especially if your phone number is still associated with your company account.

Please note that, as forum moderators, we do not have access to the internal systems required to modify Developer Program profiles or unlink phone numbers from existing accounts.

You can try visiting https://developer.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/profile using the account that was originally linked to your phone number. If you still have access, choose Delete Profile to remove the old Developer account. This may help release the phone number so you can use it again for a new registration. Please note that it can take some time, usually up to 60 days, before the number becomes available for reuse.

If you no longer have access to the old profile or the steps above do not work, we recommend contacting Microsoft Developer Support for further assistance through the following link: Services Hub. Please note that this portal (Services Hub) is a paid ticket and access is subject to certain conditions, which you can review here: Services Hub sign in FAQs | Microsoft Learn

If you need to create a new developer account right away, you might consider using a different phone number, such as a work mobile or secondary line, to complete the registration process immediately.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
