How can I prevent people from adding others into Teams "Teams" and channels?

My company has two sides to its business. Both sides are under the same Microsoft 365 tenant. They can be called Group A and Group B. Group A should not be able to add those from Group B into teams and channels on their own. Likewise, Group B should not be able to add those from Group A. If either side wants to add the other to a team or channels, this should be limited to IT. This has to be done while still allowing members of Group A and members of Group B the ability to have 1 on 1 and group chats. Does anyone have any suggestion how to do this?

    Hi @DJonesTP,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for sharing the details of your scenario. I understand the importance of maintaining separation between your two business groups while still allowing collaboration through chat.

By default, Microsoft Teams lets team owners add any user from the same Microsoft 365 tenant to their teams and channels. There are no built-in restrictions between internal groups unless you apply specific policies.

Here are suggestions you can try to troubleshoot:

    1. Use Sensitivity labels for Teams

Assign labels to enforce membership rules:

    • Teams designated for Group A → Only members from Group A can join.
    • Teams designated for Group B → Only members from Group B can join.

This approach ensures that adding members from another group requires IT approval.

    1. Restrict Team creation

Goal: Limit the ability to create new teams to IT or a designated security group.

    1. Governance and membership management
