Hello, although windows 10 has come to an end, i would rather stay on the older OS than use windows 11. I want to upgrade to windows 10 pro for the remote desktop feature. I have a windows 10 home physical key and I was wondering if upgrading through the store would get me a new key to replace or would overwrite my personal key. I want to have one key for Win 10 Home and another for Win 10 pro, but I see that they don't sell the keys no longer.

    Hi,

Microsoft does not sell Windows 10 licenses now.

Please note, Microsoft warns at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Shop.aspx

Beware of Product Keys Sold Separately

With the exception of Product Key Cards (PKC’s) distributed with COA’s, Microsoft does not distribute products keys as standalone products. If you see a listing on an auction site, online classified ad, or other online page advertising product keys for sale, it’s a good indication that the keys are likely stolen or counterfeit.

And note, upgrade thru Store is tied to hardware used for purchasing, this is why you did not get a product key. The Store sends an information about your purchase directly to the activation servers so there is no need to use a key.

Store says before purchase that this license is tied to hardware, but this is not evident enough unfortunately.

When you upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro through the Microsoft Store, you will need to purchase the upgrade. This process typically does not provide you with a new product key; instead, it upgrades your existing installation to the Pro edition, which means your current key for Windows 10 Home will be overwritten by the Pro edition key. Therefore, you will not retain a separate key for Windows 10 Home after the upgrade.

If you want to keep your Windows 10 Home key, you might consider other upgrade methods, such as using the command-line tools or manually entering a product key if you have one for Windows 10 Pro. However, keep in mind that Microsoft 365 Business Premium does not include free upgrade rights from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro, so you will need to purchase the Pro version if you choose to upgrade through the Store.
