Removing an account from the list of available accounts

In MS Teams, I see three accounts:

1 – My business account

2 – A client’s account

3 – The same account as in position 2

Questions:

  1. Why does the same account appear twice (positions 2 and 3)?
  2. Why is account number 3 marked with an exclamation mark?
  3. How can I remove account number 3 from the list?
  4. Why can’t I log in to account number 3? I receive an error message.

    Hi @Lukas

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Q&A forum.

It appears you’re seeing duplicate accounts in Microsoft Teams and encountering an error when switching to one of them.

After reviewing your description, here is an explanation of the situation:

This issue occurs because Teams often stores both the primary organization account and a guest account or cached credentials for the same tenant, leading to duplicates. The exclamation mark signals a sign-in problem, which can happen if the account was removed from the organization, credentials expired, or cached data caused conflicts. When login fails, it’s usually because the account was deleted or guest access revoked, making authentication impossible, and cached credentials can further contribute to these errors.

There are a few steps you can try to remove account number 3 from the list:

    Option 1: Clear Teams cache

Clear the cache in Teams for Windows

    Method 1: Reset the app

    • Type settings in the search box, and then select the Settings app from the results.
    • Select Apps > Installed apps, and then type Microsoft Teams in the search box.
    • Locate the New Microsoft Teams app from the results, select the More options button on the right, and then select Advanced options.
    • User's image
    • In the Reset section, select Reset.
    • Restart Teams.

    Method 2: Delete the files

    • If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar, and then select Quit.    User's image
    • Pressing Windows+R to open the Run dialog box.
    • In the Run dialog box, enter the following path, and then select OK.    %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams
    • User's image
    • Delete all files and folders in the directory.
    • Restart Teams.

Clear the cache in Teams for macOS

    • If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon in the dock, and then select Quit or press Command+Q.
    • In the Finder, open the /Applications/Utilities folder, and then double-click Terminal.
    • Enter the following commands, and press Return after each command:
    • rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
    • Restart Teams.

    Option 2: Leave the organization

    1. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations
    2. Locate the duplicate organization and click Leave organization.
    3. You may find further guidance here:

Option 3: Remove the unwanted account from Windows settings:

    • Go to Settings → Accounts → Access work or school and disconnect the account.
    • Or you can type on the search bar "Access work or school"  User's image
    • Restart Teams and sign in only with the accounts you need.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

I have completed both step 1 and step 2. When restarting Teams, I see three accounts to choose from:

    1 - my business account

    2 - my personal account

2 - a guest account with my partner/client (the same email address as the business account)

    I. Why does Teams detect these three accounts, despite having reset the settings?

II. How can I tell which one is my primary business account and which one is the guest account, when the list shows identical email addresses?

III. I logged into account no. 3 (guest), and now I can’t access my primary business account. How can I do this? When I click "Sign in with another account" and enter the email address, nothing happens — the guest account no. 3 opens again.

IV. The client shared OneDrive links with me under the guest account. Why can’t I see the shared OneDrive resources in Teams?

@Hani-N Thank you for your response, but none of the methods mentioned here had the desired effect and did not solve the issue. Do you have any other suggestions? Is there perhaps an option for remote assistance, for example via Remote Desktop through Microsoft Support?
