We have a teams group created for a project. I have uploaded an excel file which user is supposed to update. It seems like since I am the original person who uploaded that file in the teams channel, only I get email notification when someone put a comment in the file. The user tried to create a group ABC and put all the members in, tag the group in his comment but still notification is only sent to me. This cause a problem when I am absence because no one is notified by Teams.

How can I fix this to allow everyone who is member in this channel receive notification when comments are added to the file.

    Hello @Jen

    Welcome to the Q&A Community!

Thank you for contacting us. I would like to reconfirm the situation and provide a detailed explanation of the current behavior and known issue.

Based on your description, you have created a private channel within Microsoft Teams and uploaded an Excel file for collaboration. Members of the channel are updating the file and adding comments using the Excel Comments feature (as in the screenshot below).

    undefined

You have observed that when comments are added, only the original uploader of the file receives email notifications, even when members are tagged in the Teams chat or when a group tag is used.

This behavior is expected due to the way notifications for Excel comments are managed:

    • Comments added inside an Excel file are part of the document and are managed by SharePoint or OneDrive, not by Microsoft Teams. By default, the file owner (the person who uploaded the file) receives notifications for comments.
    • Tagging a Teams group or channel inside an Excel comment does not trigger notifications for all members.
    • Channel notification settings in Teams apply only to posts and replies within the channel conversation, not to comments inside files.

To address this known issue, I suggest that you use Microsoft Power Automate to create a custom workflow. This workflow can monitor changes or comments in the file and automatically post a message in the Teams channel to notify all members. This approach ensures visibility and timely updates for everyone in the channel.

Please let me know if you would like to apply Power Automate to achieve your outcome. I'd be happy to assist.
