You can still download SQL Server 2022 — Microsoft has just reorganized the download pages, so it’s a little harder to find than before.
Here are the current, official locations:
1. SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition (recommended for courses)
This is the version most training programs, including Coursera, expect you to use. It’s free and includes the full feature set. You can find it on Microsoft’s site by searching for: “SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition download” (The link will take you to the direct SQL Server 2022 download page.)
2. SQL Server 2022 Express Edition
If your course only needs a lightweight installation, the Express edition is also available. Search for: “SQL Server 2022 Express download”
If you’re looking for the full offline installation files, Microsoft hosts them in the SQL Server Download Center under the SQL Server 2022 section.
Additional Note
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is not included in the main installer. If your course requires SSMS for query practice, you can download it separately by searching for: “Download SSMS” on Microsoft’s website.
Why the Confusion?
Microsoft recently updated the SQL Server download pages, so older links or bookmarks now redirect to the main SQL Server overview page. That page highlights SQL Server 2022, but doesn’t always show the download links directly. Using the version-specific pages (Developer or Express) is the quickest way to get the correct installer.
