Remap a Shortcut for Copilot key on Asus Zenbook when PowerTools won't work (per Asus customer support)

I have an Asus A14 Zenbook that has a Copilot key where the right Ctrl key use to be. I tried using Microsoft PowerTools to try to Remap a Shortcut for the Copilot key into a Ctrl key.

This has not worked.

I contacted Asus customer support who have indicated:

"Regarding your query about remapping the CoPilot key on your ASUS device, we have had a number of ASUS customers reach out for support on this matter. Unfortunately, this limitation has been imposed by Microsoft directly.... The only thing we can suggest is to reach out to Microsoft directly for support or to request that this feature be considered."

Can anyone help?

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We understand how inconvenient it can be when the Copilot key replaces the traditional Right Ctrl key, especially if you rely on standard keyboard shortcuts.

The Copilot key is not just the F23 key, it actually sends a combination: Win (Left) + Shift (Left) + F23. Because of this, the Remap a Key feature in PowerToys will not work, as it only supports single key inputs. Instead, you need to use Remap a Shortcut and enable Exact Match.

I know you’ve already tried PowerToys, but if you haven’t tried this specific method yet, I’d appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to give it a try:

Open PowerToys > Keyboard Manager.
Toggle Enable Keyboard Manager to On.
Skip “Remap a Key” and delete any previous single-key remap for F23 (to avoid conflicts).
The Copilot key is not just F23; it sends Win (Left) + Shift (Left) + F23.
Click Remap a Shortcut.
In the Shortcut column, click the pencil icon and press the Copilot key.
It should populate as Win (Left) + Shift (Left) + F23.
In the To Send column:
Set Action = Send Key/Shortcut.
For Shortcut, select Ctrl from the dropdown.
Enable Exact Match (important when using all three keys match).
Click OK in the top-right corner to save.

After this, your Copilot key should function as a Ctrl key for shortcuts like Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, etc.

Thank you for your prompt response.

Unfortunately, the instructions you've given is exactly what I had done already. When that did not work, I reached out to Asus who said it is a recurring issue that has been a limitation imposed by Microsoft.

See snippets showing what I've done.

I've watched numerous Youtube videos that show this solution works for other laptops; but the same thing does not seem to work on the new Asus A14 Zenbook.

Do you have any other solutions?

And/or is there a way request Microsoft directly for a fix/patch?

Select Windows as the product and describe the issue (Copilot key remapping on Asus Zenbook A14).

Include details such as:

Device model and OS version.

Steps you’ve tried (PowerToys,..).

Asus confirmation that this is a Microsoft-imposed limitation.

In the meantime, you can still try:

Mapping the Copilot key to Left Ctrl instead of Right Ctrl in PowerToys.

Using SharpKeys or AutoHotkey for advanced remapping (please note these are third-party tools, so use at your discretion).

Hi Vikki

Unfortunately, I have tried mapping the Copilot key to Left Ctrl instead of Right Ctrl in PowerToys. (and also just plain Ctrl as well); and none of it has worked.

I have also tried to contact Microsoft, but I only get auto-generated responses and the inability to select more details (such as detailing the steps I have taken) and instead seam to be stuck at a drop down menu under "Category" where I can only select "Billing and payment updates, Manage my subscription, or Cancel my subscription".

Do you have any other suggestions on how I can contact Microsoft directly?

copilot-key now works as control-key.
but the cursor-pointer-circle that comes up with left-control-key doesn't come up with newly mapped right-control-key.. 😕

do we have solution to this problem?

Dear Ulhas Mukne,

The circle around the pointer doesn’t appear because the trigger for this effect only responds to the actual Left Ctrl key or hardware signal. When you remap the Copilot key to Right Ctrl using PowerToys Keyboard Manager, it works at the software level, so Windows or PowerToys doesn’t treat it as a real hardware Ctrl press. That’s why the effect doesn’t activate.

Sign in to your Microsoft account on the Microsoft Support page.

Select Windows as your product and click Get Home Support.

Enter your issue in the search box and click Get Help.

Scroll down and select Contact Support.

Choose:

Product: Windows

Category: Other accessories

Then click Confirm.

Finally, select Chat with a support agent in your web browser.

Hi Vikki.

I spent an hour online with Microsoft support (15 mins with one person and 45 mins with a Senior Engineer in the Escalation Team). They confirmed that PowerTools will not allow me to Remap a Shortcut for the Co-pilot key. They tried to get around this by remotely logging into my Asus A14 Zenbook, tried changing my Registry directly.

Unfortunately, this did not work.

They ultimately suggested that I provide feedback to the Hub Application and hope that the team might add this function in future updates.
