I received a pop-up that Windows Defender disabled my computer and to not shut down my computer and call 1-833-959-2008 for support. How do I know that is not a hacker? How do I remove this Windows Defender security alerts that appear as pop-ups on your screen? When I called the number, they said there was suspicious activity from Facebook and provided a number that I called, and they wanted me to enter a website into my search option and enter it for their access to my computer. This is a new computer that I purchased yesterday.

It sounds like you are experiencing a tech support scam, which is a common issue where scammers use fake alerts to trick users into providing personal information or access to their devices. Here are some steps you can take to deal with this situation:

    1. Do Not Call the Number: Microsoft does not send unsolicited alerts or make unsolicited calls. The number you received is likely part of the scam. Do not engage with them.
    2. Close the Pop-Up: If the pop-up is persistent, try closing your browser or using Task Manager to end the browser process. Be cautious not to click any buttons in the pop-up itself.
    3. Run a Full Scan: Use Microsoft Defender Antivirus to run a full scan of your computer. This will help detect and remove any malware that may have been installed.
    4. Uninstall Suspicious Software: If you installed any software at the request of the scammers, uninstall it immediately. Consider resetting your device to factory settings if you suspect it has been compromised.
    5. Change Your Passwords: Change passwords for any accounts that may have been accessed or compromised.
    6. Monitor Your Accounts: Keep an eye on your financial accounts for any unauthorized transactions.
    7. Report the Scam: You can report the scam to Microsoft and any relevant authorities to help prevent others from falling victim to it.

Remember, legitimate Microsoft communications will never ask for personal information or remote access to your device unless you have initiated the contact yourself.

    Hi Robert,

The pop-up window that appeared in your screen with a phone number and claims to be from "Windows Defender" or "Microsoft Support" is a scam. Please don't call that number, and importantly, don't give anyone remote access to your system. If you gave remote access: Disconnect your computer from the internet immediately and run a thorough malware scan.

Download Malwarebytes Antimalware and run a scan. Eliminate every piece of malware it finds. Malwarebytes should also get rid of all adware and PUAs and browser hijackers.

Note: the Malwarebytes setup may activate the Premium trial (15-day) version. After 15 days, it switches to the free version automatically.

    Post the detection report here.
