Dear Denise Fontaine
Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.
The situation you've described—frequent pop-ups that eventually freeze—is concerning, as it suggests a problem with a crucial system component responsible for your device's protection. Windows Security pop-ups often occur when the app detects a potential threat or needs your input, but a frozen one suggests a temporary glitch in the app or system resources.
To help you further, could you share:
- What is your Windows version?
- Do you see any error code pop up?
- Does it happen randomly or just for some specific application?
In the meantime, please consider trying my suggestions and let me know anything new from it:
Press [Ctrl + Shift + Esc] to open [Task Manager] > Find the process named [Windows Security] or [Windows Security Notification] (it might be listed under Background Processes) > Right-click it > select [End task].
Open [Settings] > [Apps] > [Installed apps] > Search for [Windows Security] > Click the three-dot menu next to it > select [Advanced options] > click [Repair] (or [Reset] if [Repair] doesn't work).
Press Win + R > type services.msc > find "Windows Security Health Service"> right-click [Restart].
- Open [Command Prompt] > [Run as an Administrator] > Press [Enter] after each command
- Run the DISM tool:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- After DISM completes, run the SFC tool:
sfc /scannow
- Restart your PC.
- Open [PowerShell] > [Run as an Administrator] > Press [Enter] after each command:
`Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers
Download and run Automatically fix via this article: Automatically fix Windows security issues - Microsoft Support
Once the interface is stable, you can adjust the notification frequency to ensure you only see alerts for critical issues:
- Open [Windows Security] > [Settings] (gear icon, bottom-left) > [Manage notifications] > Under [Notifications], select [Manage notifications] again > you can selectively turn off alerts that are not critical.
Please keep me updated with anything new that you are trying with each option.
