Hi,

Can I use the Pay-as-you-go pricing model for a SQL server on a local virtual machine? Or does it need its own dedicated machine?

Thank you

The Pay-as-you-go pricing model for SQL Server is specifically designed for Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) and does not apply to local virtual machines. This model allows you to pay for the SQL Server license as part of the per-second cost of running the Azure VM. If you are using SQL Server on a local VM, you would typically need to use your own SQL Server license or consider other licensing options, such as the Azure Hybrid Benefit if applicable.

Pay as you go is only available on an azure hosted vm. Local instances (vm or not) require a license.

I disagree with QA assist and Bruce. I believe pay-as-you-go is available for on-prem VMs as well. You need to Arc-enable the computer for this to be possible. Once you have done that, you set up the licensing from the portal as I recall, and the license cost will appear on your Azure bill.
