For recordings on Teams , where is pause recording

I know this has been asked before - but the only discussion threads I can find on this topic are locked.

I found it quite amusing to see the post about Google AI product enhancement hallucination (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/4421205/for-recordings-on-teams-where-is-pause-recording?page=2&source=docs#answers)

Teams meetings are an important part of organisation governance. When a board of directors, or group of trustees uses Teams for an official meeting, we want to be able to have the transcript on by default (Copilot Facilitator) but have a "pause" button (accompanied by some a very visible notification) in order to have off-the-record discussions.

With the transcript (and recording if required for the meeting) being paused and resumed several times during a meeting, we need the Facilitator Notes to be in one place, to have a single Recap containing a single transcript (and single recording if required) with clearly identified sections that were "off-the-record".

Given that one of the discussion thread about this goes back to 2021, I would have hoped by now (especially with the Facilitator not necessarily being able to discern what should be on-the-record and what should be off-the-record) that the "pause" feature would be with us by now.

Oh, and while I'm here...

The ability to just have a transcript without needing to waste resources for a full multi-media recording is a very welcome feature. However, it would also be very useful to be able to have a transcript and audio recording so that if the Facilitator-generated notes are disputed, the transcript can be validated by listening to the original audio. Why waste resources by capturing and storing video when, for some meetings, the audio is sufficient?

Currently, Microsoft Teams does not have a dedicated "pause" feature for recordings during meetings. When a meeting is recorded, it captures audio, video, and screen sharing activities continuously until the recording is stopped. This means that if you wish to have off-the-record discussions, you would need to stop the recording entirely and then start a new recording when you want to resume capturing the meeting.

While there is a feature for automatic transcription during meetings, the ability to pause recordings has not been implemented as of now. Users have expressed interest in this feature for better governance and management of sensitive discussions, but it remains unavailable.

For more information on recording and transcription policies in Teams, you can refer to the relevant documentation.

    Dear @Richard Bradley,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I truly appreciate your detailed and insightful feedback regarding the need for a “Pause Recording/Transcript” feature in Microsoft Teams. You raise an important point about organizational governance and compliance, especially for board or trustee meetings.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and the disruption this current limitation causes your organization when trying to hold structured meetings that require both on-the-record and off-the-record discussions within a single session.

You are correct: the ability to pause and resume the recording and transcription does not currently exist in Microsoft Teams. When you need an off-the-record segment, the only current method is to Stop the recording/transcription entirely, and then Restart it when the formal session resumes. This unfortunately results in multiple files and multiple Recaps for a single meeting, which adds significant administrative overhead.

I also empathize with your observations about resource management and the need for audio-only recording options to validate transcripts without storing unnecessary video data.

If this is a feature you would like to see, I suggest keeping an eye on the Microsoft Teams blog or the Microsoft 365 Roadmap | Microsoft 365 for any updates on this feature. In the meantime, I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. I also strongly recommend that you share your detailed experience and feedback directly with the Microsoft product team through their official channels. This is the most effective way to make your voice heard and influence future feature improvements and adjustments.  You can visit the Microsoft Teams · Community to submit a new idea or vote on existing one here: Add an option to pause a video recording · Community.
