My surface pro 9 keyboard has suddenly stopped responding to any typing or any use of the mouse pad. I had disconnected it many times, restarted the computer several times and checked to see if it was updated which it is. At this point I suspect a hardware issue but it is has an expired warranty.

If your Surface Pro 9 keyboard is not responding after trying to disconnect it, restart the device, and ensure it's updated, it may indicate a hardware issue, especially since the warranty has expired. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check Connections: Ensure that the keyboard is properly connected to the Surface Pro 9. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause it to stop responding.
    2. Test with Another Device: If possible, connect the keyboard to another Surface device to see if it works there. This can help determine if the issue is with the keyboard or the Surface itself.
    3. Update Drivers: Even if the system is updated, check if there are any specific driver updates for the keyboard. You can download drivers and firmware for your Surface from the Microsoft support site.
    4. Reset the Device: As a last resort, you may consider resetting your Surface Pro 9 to factory settings. Make sure to back up your data before doing this.
    5. Contact Support: Since the warranty is expired, consider contacting Microsoft support for further assistance or potential repair options.

If the keyboard is indeed malfunctioning and not responding, you may need to look into repair or replacement options as outlined in the Microsoft support documentation.

Hello Salem, welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

First, we need to find out if this is a hardware or software problem. To do that, test if the keyboard works in Surface UEFI.

    • Shut down your Surface Pro 9 completely.
    • Press and hold the Volume Up button.
    • While holding Volume Up, press and release the Power button.
    • Keep holding Volume Up until the UEFI screen appears.
    • Once you’re in UEFI, try using the arrow keys and the touchpad to move around the menu.

If the keyboard does not respond in UEFI, it means the issue is hardware-related (keyboard or connector). Paid repair or replacement is the only path forward.

If the keyboard works in UEFI, then we can look at software troubleshooting steps next.

Let me know how it goes. Warm regards,
