Geo Replication Cost

Hi,

If I use Archive storage with GRS, my data will be replicated once to the secondary region when it is initially uploaded. Since my dataset (100 GB) does not change afterwards, I want to confirm whether I will be charged the geo-replication fee again in the following months.

To clarify:

One-time geo-replication cost: 100 GB × $0.02 = $2 (charged only when the data is first replicated)

Monthly Archive GRS storage cost: 100 GB × $0.00279 = $0.279 per month

No recurring geo-replication charges if the data remains unchanged

Could you please confirm this understanding?

Best Regards

    Hello Mittal Priyamvada (BD/ICA-CAE)

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A platform.

One-time geo-replication cost: When you upload 100 GB to Archive tier with GRS, the initial replication to the secondary region incurs the geo-replication transfer fee (e.g., $0.02 per GB → $2 total).

Monthly storage cost: After replication, you pay the Archive GRS storage rate for the stored capacity (e.g., $0.00279 per GB → $0.279 per month for 100 GB).

No recurring geo-replication charges: If the data remains unchanged, there are no additional geo-replication transfer fees in subsequent months. Charges only apply again if you add or modify data that needs replication.

Geo-replication data transfer is charged per GB transferred. Storage charges are based on the redundancy option and tier selected.

    Reference: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/storage-redundancy#pricing

Geo-replication charges: These apply only when data is initially replicated or when new/modified data needs replication. There is no recurring geo-replication fee for static data.

Ongoing cost: You continue paying the Archive GRS storage rate monthly for the total stored capacity.

    Your calculation is correct:

    • Initial replication: $2 (100 GB × $0.02)
    • Monthly storage: $0.279 (100 GB × $0.00279)
    • No additional geo-replication charges unless data changes.

    Thanks,

    Suchitra.

Your understanding is mostly correct. When using Geo-Redundant Storage (GRS) with Archive storage, you will incur a one-time geo-replication cost when the data is initially uploaded. This cost is based on the amount of data being replicated to the secondary region, which in your case is 100 GB, resulting in a one-time charge of $2 (100 GB × $0.02).

After the initial replication, if your dataset does not change, you will not incur additional geo-replication charges in the following months. You will only be charged the monthly Archive GRS storage cost, which is $0.279 per month (100 GB × $0.00279).

    So, to summarize:

    • One-time geo-replication cost: $2 (charged only at the time of initial replication)
    • Monthly Archive GRS storage cost: $0.279
    • No recurring geo-replication charges if the data remains unchanged.

This aligns with the pricing structure for Azure Storage.
