How can I show the status bar in the Managed Home Screen? (Android 8.1)

After adding several Zebra MC330K devices to Intune and configuring them to use the Managed Home Screen, the status bar and navigation buttons (other than the back button) are not showing. Both of these (status bar and navigation buttons) show after exiting kiosk mode. It is only while using the Managed Home Screen and launching apps through the Managed Home Screen that the status bar and home/overview buttons are missing.

The home and overview buttons being missing are alright as I can just use the virtual home button feature as a workaround, but the status bar is needed for users to be able to see if the alternate key functions (orange and blue buttons on the keypad) are active. These show up as an orange circle and a blue square in the status bar when the buttons are pressed, letting the user know they are active.

I have enabled the following settings in my Restrictions Device Configuration profile for these devices:

  • Enabled system navigation features: Home and overview buttons
  • System notifications and information: Show system notifications and information in device's status bar

Is there any way to have the status bar showing while using Managed Home Screen on Android 8.1 devices?
If not, any workarounds to be able to see if the alternate key functions are active would be very helpful. Thank you.

The Managed Home Screen app for Android Enterprise dedicated devices does not support showing the status bar while in kiosk mode. This is a limitation of the Managed Home Screen itself, as it is designed to restrict user access to certain device features and provide a controlled environment.

Since you have already enabled the settings for system navigation features and notifications in your device configuration profile, it appears that these settings are not effective in displaying the status bar while using the Managed Home Screen. Unfortunately, there is no built-in way to enable the status bar in this mode.

As a workaround, you might consider using the virtual home button feature, which you mentioned, or explore if there are any third-party applications that could provide similar functionality without compromising the kiosk mode's integrity. However, be cautious with third-party applications as they may not integrate well with the Managed Home Screen or could introduce security risks.

For further assistance, you may want to check with Microsoft Intune support or the community forums for any updates or additional workarounds that may have been discovered by other users.
