It is 2026 all but and after 30 years of advances, since I first started using IT, Windows 11 seems utterly incapable of a simple switch between my (top quality) external speakers, connected for home office use and then, when disconnected, to my laptops internal speakers for use away from my home office.
I have watched a dozen or so youtube fix videos (ultimately they all seem to assume you can make this switch easily) and helpful threads ( same general consensus) and none, nada, zero have the solution.
My system is totally up to date, it has been scanned for issues (clean) and all drivers are currently the best available. The only bookmarked but untried possible solution is one that suggests uninstalling my external speakers and, reading through, having to reinstall when I plug them in again and constantly uninstall when I wish to use the laptop away from the external speakers. Really? Really?? Really??? In 1996 (see above) all fixes were thus. In 2026.....I repeat with emphasis...really????
You sense my frustration that an £800 bit of kit (14 months old) is seemingly let down on what should be a simple switch and with my level of IT savvy, I know is 100% down to the operating system.
I know people will mean well but please no advice about 'fixing via Device Manager' or 'settings/system/sound' or via the 'speaker icon'. As mentioned above have tried all the related youtube and thread fixes and even got creative with combining one or two.
I am old school with my music (vinyl 6k + albums) and my system set up is all vintage (I guess each part would average 50 years old although the turntable is modern). On all the parts, with one flick of a switch (physical!) it responds, alters, changes immediately. I use this analogy as it is audio/sound related. Windows 11.......not so much it seems.
Any help most graciously received.
