Can't access Student's links to their assignments in Microsoft Word

I am using a MacBook Pro. When I click on the student's assignment links, I receive one of the following messages:

for the first assignment:

"Something went wrong

We're sorry, sign-in isn't working right now. But we're on it! Please try again later.

If this problem persists, contact your support team and include these technical details:

Correlation ID: [Moderator note: personal info removed]

Date and Time:  [Moderator note: personal info removed]

URL: https://onedrive.live.com/

Issue Type: Unknown issue."

for the second assignment:

"This document is protected by an unsupported Information Rights Management (IRM) label. Word can't open it in a browser. To view this file please open it in the desktop version of Microsoft Word." Clicking on the desktop app leads to a sign-in page. When I enter my email address, the screen loops back to the sign-in page repeatedly.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!

It seems you are encountering two different issues when trying to access your students' assignments in Microsoft Word on your MacBook Pro.

    1. Sign-in Issue: The first error message indicates that there is a problem with the sign-in process. This could be due to temporary service issues or problems with your account. You might want to try signing in again later or check if there are any known service outages affecting Microsoft services.
    2. IRM Protected Document: The second issue is related to Information Rights Management (IRM). The error message states that the document is protected by an unsupported IRM label, and it cannot be opened in the browser. To view this file, you need to use the desktop version of Microsoft Word. However, since you are experiencing a sign-in loop when attempting to access the desktop app, this could indicate a problem with your account or the authentication process.

To resolve these issues, consider the following steps:

    • Ensure that you are using the correct credentials for your Microsoft account.
    • Clear your browser cache and cookies or try a different browser to sign in.
    • If the problem persists, contact your support team with the provided correlation ID for further assistance.
    • For the IRM issue, ensure that your account has the necessary permissions to access the protected content and that you are signed in to the correct account associated with the document.

If you continue to face difficulties, it may be beneficial to reach out to Microsoft support for more specific guidance related to your account and access issues.

    Dear Jennifer F Sklarew

Thank you for posting your question on the Q&A Forum.

For the first issue with the first assignment: The error URL you provided (onedrive.live.com) shows the link is pointing to a personal OneDrive. Since this is a student assignment, please make sure you’re signed in with your school account. Please try this method to see if you can access the assignment:

    • Open a browser in Private/Incognito mode and sign in with your school account. This ensures a fresh session without cached credentials.
    • If you can access the assignment in Private mode, clear your browser cache.
    • Consider using Microsoft Edge for multiple profiles, or keep your personal account in Edge and use another browser for your school account to access all school links without conflicts.

For the second issue: The message indicates the document is protected by an Information Rights Management (IRM) label, which requires opening in the desktop version of Word with your school account. Since you’re experiencing a sign-in loop, you might need to clear Office credentials from Keychain:

    1. Close all Microsoft Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
    2. Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access.
    3. In the search bar, type Office and delete all entries.
    4. Search for ADAL and delete any entries.
    5. Restart your Mac.
    6. Open any Office app (e.g., Word) and sign in with your school account, then retry accessing the second assignment. You might need to download the second assignment.

If this does not resolve the problem, use the Office License Removal Tool. For details, please see this link: How to remove Office license files on a Mac

Please note that if your school account does not have a license for the desktop app, you may need to contact the assignment owner and ask them to modify the sensitivity label so it can be opened in Office for the web, or contact your IT admin to assign the appropriate license.

Please try these suggestions and provide feedback. Looking forward to your reply.
